We had the good fortune of connecting with Jerylann Warner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jerylann, what makes you happy? Why?
Being productive makes me happy ;creating , innovating , nurturing and artistically providing for a dance community. It makes me very happy to see where people go with the opportunities. It makes for a very satisfying reality when over time your vision is sustained by others because it is meaningful to them , that makes me happy.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think my story is every creatives story . You just show up. You persevere. You do and un do . It really is something we all have in common , the diligence . Your mind is not always with you . We do suffer from our on going criticism and we are vulnerable but then there are moments of acceptance and peace and you let your vision go until you begin churning up the next project. It is not very romantic actually . It is truly a challenge . If I am to be credited with creating a brand , it may be distinctive in the atmosphere I seek to instill. That first . How will this story, this environment, this song , this dance convey a message that is touching, unexpected or better yet be lasting? That is what I do . I string together images and facets of a story that become shows revealed in song and dance.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Zonolite park. The creek system that runs through Atlanta. An Atlanta United game. Best city spirit. Ponce city market and the beltline at sunset. Wonderful walk through the city. Callanwolde ! Downtown Decatur , East Atlanta Village, Cabbage town.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutouts to the dance clubs and discos that let me in when i was under age so that I could dance for hours . Sometimes making exceptions makes for the exceptional . I found joy enough in this to know that pursuing the study of Dance was something that was right for me. Shoutouts to my parents who valued reading and writing and of course for driving me to lessons . w And again to them for moving our family to a beautiful place in the foothills of the Catskill mountains where nature became dear to me. And where I met shakers and movers, visionaries such as my mentor Brenda Bufalino. Shoutouts to my dentist Elise Ashpole . She provides care with grace. She shows up for people and meets them where they are. She is kind and this supports me. Shoutouts to Jillian Mitchell and Corian Ellisor, two dance Artists who are ALL about integrity . Notice the grit in integrity ? They have so much strength and dedication to compassionately training children. Amazing. Shoutouts to my daughter Anna Mia Warner who defines equanimity . Her depth and insight and beauty moves me.
