We had the good fortune of connecting with Jerome Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jerome, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?Similar to how Jay-Z started Roc-a-Fella Records when he couldn’t get signed as a recording artist, I was trying to work with a law firm and couldn’t get hired. I was switching from litigation to transactional work, and there was no interest in that litigation experience. I always believed in my ability to go out and get business, so while I was young, it seemed like the best time to bet on that ability. There was a lot I still needed to learn, not just about practicing law, but in running a business too. But, there is no time like the present to learn a valuable life skill.

I always knew I wanted to start my own business. I did not expect it to be a law firm, but when an opportunity presents itself, you have to take it. I had money saved up to buy a house, and instead, I chose to pursue this business. Everyone knows that starting a business is tough, so it seemed to be a great time to undertake the challenge while I was relatively young, and unattached (no wife, kids, or pets).
Something else that played a factor is the picture in my head of what my life could look like if I was completely in charge. I could control what the office space would look and feel like, who I would work with, and what projects I would work on. It all created this energy inside me to build the world as I saw it.

What should our readers know about your business?
The key is my knowledge of both emerging technology AND entertainment. As the world of entertainment expands through technology, my ability to understand – at a deep level – how the technology works, allows me to effectively advocate for the entertainers I represent. This understanding of both worlds is rare.

Because I represent NBA stars, TV Talent, Film Production Companies, and software companies, the types of challenges I face on a daily basis are vast. But being the nexus of so much information allows me to bring valuable perspective and creative deal-making to any situation. Some of my most exciting projects are in areas of new technologies or new industries. I am really excited to work with my clients to forge ahead into unknown territory.

You would be hard pressed to find another entertainment attorney who understands machine learning and NFTs at my level. As such, I make informed business recommendations, and craft strategy for business ventures, based on more knowledge. I think that is key.

In addition, my ability to explain complex subjects in simple terms, helps me negotiate more effectively on complex issues, and also helps my clients understand what is going on. This builds trust. And that trust carries a brand far in today’s world.

As trust grows with clients, the job becomes much more involved than just terms on a page. You become a trusted advisor, a strategy consultant, a sounding board for ideas, and an essential part of the team. That can be stressful, because now your client’s problems become your problems. Sharing the weight of decisions and uncertainty can weigh on you, but that experience strengthens relationships. Creating strong business relationships bodes well for your future business success.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Atlanta airport is one of the best in the country. Once I pick them up, we are heading to Slutty Vegan to grab something to eat, and maybe Boogalou’s to grab an early drink. Then, we will slide down to Red Phone Booth for a cigar and some conversation. Hopefully, it is football season, and we can head to an Atlanta Falcons game, but if not, we can find something to do around Ponce City Market.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family definitely supported me through everything. There’s an entire community of friends, mentors, colleagues, and even acquaintances who have helped along the way. Whether it was support on social media, an introduction to a potential client, or an invitation to speak on a panel, there were a lot of people close to me who helped me get to where I am now. I’ve had great mentors who help me with the job-specific know-how, and others who guide me on which events to attend and connections to make. I would definitely like to thank and give a shoutout to all those who have helped and those who continue to help. YOU ARE APPRECIATED!
