Meet Jermere Nickerson: Creative Director and CEO

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jermere Nickerson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jermere, how do you think about risk?
The term high risk high rewards is a term I was introduced to at a young age and continued to be a them in my life. It motivated me to move out of my comfort zone. Not just with owning my own business, but with my work life, and being a student athlete as well . Applying this way of taken me to places I never thought I would be. It has taught me patience and perseverance, very key tools to being a small business owner.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I had no idea what I was doing when I first began creating these products, I had no idea what I was doing. It took some time for me learn about the raw materials and what they could best used for. The hardest was figuring what texture and smells I wanted the products to have. When creating the fragrances, I had picture what story am I telling or what point am I trying to get across. Learning the fundamentals of fragrance making took some time, but it once I got a better foundation I was able to tell a story through smell.
This goes the same with my marketing strategy. Because I’m so hands on with creating the product it makes it easier to present to the world The Big Beard Co and what we have to offer. I take pride in how we chose to market our company and who the public views us. I believe we have created an identity that helps solidify our position in our respective market.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The first place I would take them to eat would either be Noni’s Coney Island, Sweet Water Tavern, Or Pie Sci. In my opinion these are Detroit food staples. Then we would hang out downtown in the Campus Martius Park area and of course Greek Town. I would for sure find us a few art galleries our pop up shop events to go to. My favorite places to grab drink are the Detroit Distillery and the Woodward Avenue Brewery. Something about the vibes in these places just works for me. I couldn’t let them leave with out heading to my families restaurant, The Soup Dive.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

Mr. Larry Johnson and the Men Who Dare Inc. has believed in me since my freshmen year at North Carolina Central University. Mr. Johnson saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself. He began to mold me, mentor me, and coach me in the art being the leader in charge.
Dr. Marcus Harris and Prosperous Detroit provided me with resources that I would not have been able to access on my own. Dr. Harris also began to mentor me and force me to think in ways to further advance The Big Beard Company.
Dr. Myles Munroe and his book “The Purpose and Power of Vision” would sometimes bring me to tears because it felt like this book was written for me. Sometimes we for get that we are not alone and this book reminded that I’m and to keep going.
