We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeremy Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeremy, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process when I entered this business was, there was no one doing it in my city to help Artists. Being an Artist myself, I retired early, at least to me in order to help future Artist. We didn’t have ANY media helping in the Hip Hop culture and very little at all helping businesses to grow. There was one that I can recall and We also later began to work with called SagTvDvD and it’s owner Harold “Herk” Beverly Jr. So in 2003, I decided to begin my first magazine that was called Da Hype Magazine. First Issue dropped in 2004 and last Issue dropped in 2014. As it grew, I wasn’t prepared for business. I felt I was only prepared to pass it hand to hand and block to block. I took more of a business approach with Thawed Magazine, my second magazine.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Thawed Magazine is a Magazine with an old school feel that has many new school aspects to it. It’s a 48 Page magazine in its essence but from social media like YouTube, Instagram, Facebook Twitter and even reedit, you can find Thawed Magazine. You can also find Thawed on Magzter, the worlds largest magazine distributor by typing the name “Thawed Magazine” in their search button. We do interviews, as well as promote wide ranging topics. You can type in “Thawedmagazine.com” to find anything related to Us. We have 4 contributing writers, Jeffrey R. Bulls, Steven Dottery and Queen Rose in Saginaw, Michigan and Crystal Flowers in Georgia. And Myself in Arkansas currently, hailing from Saginaw, Michigan. What sets us apart from most, is that we bring it from a ground level view. Articulate and thoughtful, as I’ve once heard, “they don’t read anymore” etc, well we have plenty of readers and growing but it’s noticeable that video and pictures is more for this current time. We have that too. So we try to cover all angles plus I’ve been covering music for at least 17 years now. I’m most proud of, when people reach out to us or I see familiar names on our posts or shares. I usually take note of who supports Us if possible as I’m less worried about who doesn’t. You can’t force anyone to rock wit ya. Many, it takes time and some, it won’t matter what you do, they will still act like they don’t see you. It is what it is. It’s never been easy and I don’t expect it to ever be. I choose to do this and after so many years, it’s just engrained, whether one person reads Thawed or more do. It’s just in US!! Thawed basically stands for over coming challenges. We tend to watch many in all categories and the obstacles they encounter. The name Thawed, came about when I was in Michigan and it gets cold, and I was looking to Thaw out. Turn up the heat. So I flipped it somewhat, to mean Thawed out your obstacles. Anything in your way (ice reference), keep battling and fighting until you Thaw it out. I’d like the world to know about our brand, that we won’t be going anywhere. Whether people see us, act like they don’t, or love Us, we are always evolving!! We started as a 16 page Mag with a different name, in 2004. Interviewed many Local as well as mainstream Artist with that Magazine. 17 years later, it’s offspring came out stronger, which started in 2018 with its name… “Thawed Magazine.” And in a short amount of time, the brand is standing strong but plans to get even stronger with time. #Salute
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m from Saginaw, Michigan. So, I always think about the city daily and the people. I Just came back from the city, as we visit as much as we can. It’s definitely always places to eat at, from Magic Kitchen, Tony’s, Rite Spot, Cruz Kitchen, Crudup’s, to Baldwin’s Smokehouse. Admittedly, most of the places to hang out, is with family and friends. Laughing, joking and enjoying their presence.
As for Arkansas, where I currently reside, I haven’t seen it all but there are many local restaurants like Sweet Mama T’s in El Dorado, Arkansas to other restaurants like Applebee’s. Ramona’s City Grill in Strong, Arkansas. We also like to go to West Monroe, Louisiana, for more games for the kids and the Pecanland Mall is still going strong. We like seeing different things, as I’ve also known, Life is short!!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
To any and everyone who has taking the time out of their day or night, to read, share or speak on Thawed Magazine or myself, I #Salute and appreciate. My Wife Stephanie Jackson has been there for every step, as well as our Children, La’Kiya, Jeremy Jr., and My Youngest Jre’Von to my Brother Leon Voltz who is also a Businessman. It helps when you’re surrounded by other businessmen. Saginaw, Michigan has been very instrumental in my life and growth of Thawed. And currently, Strong, Arkansas as well as El Dorado, Arkansas as well, have been very vital to our growth. Family and friends who have asked for and many who pay for our merch, it’s very appreciated as a business needs funding to grow and develop. Artists and businesses in Saginaw to Strong. From businessmen like Kattar Baz, to Joe “Mr. Godsent” Polk, to Getti and many from my childhood neighborhood on 7th and Tuscola. My Aunt Wanda has been one of our biggest supporters, so never forget how a vital foundation piece begins with the ones closest to you. It won’t be all and maybe very few but it usually starts there, before it grows to people you never knew. It’s been ups and downs but it’s always been a pleasure.
