We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenny Kahn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenny, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Risk is an inherent part of any entrepreneurial journey. It involves stepping into the unknown, making decisions without guaranteed outcomes. For Girl With A Recipe, transitioning to her meal prep business from part-time to full-time, understanding risk means acknowledging both the potential rewards and the possible setbacks.
Taking risks has been a significant driver of growth in my business. When I first started my meal prep business part-time, I was trying to balance my corporate job and existing commitments with the demands of a new venture, which required a lot of planning and having to accept that I was always working and going to miss out on fun things. Once I took the leap of faith and left the corporate world, I began to see more opportunities arise and discovered numerous paths to success that I had been missing.
What kept me going and made it all worthwhile was the drive and passion to run my own business and work full-time as a chef and be my own boss. Passion for cooking and a clear vision for my business have been crucial in mitigating the fear of taking risks. My dedication to providing healthy, delicious meals keeps me motivated even when facing uncertainties. This passion helps me stay focused on long-term goals rather than being deterred by short-term challenges.
Finally, I would not be where I am today without taking the risk of leaving a secure corporate job to pursue what I love. The potential rewards—such as greater creative freedom, increased revenue, and making a bigger impact on my customers’ lives—make it a risk worth taking.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Driven by her love for creating recipes and desire to share her food, Jenny established Girl With A Recipe, LLC. Her vision was dedicated to making healthy eating convenient, delicious, and accessible. We understand that in today’s fast-paced world, finding the time and energy to cook nutritious meals can be a challenge. Girl With A Recipe is here to simplify your life and support your journey towards a healthier lifestyle. Girl With A Recipe takes care of the meal planning, grocery shopping, and cooking, so you can focus on what matters to you. What makes this service unique is that the menu is different every week. I am proud of everything I’ve accomplished that I never thought I could achieve on my own. From creating the website and managing social media and marketing to cooking for people who have never met me and are trying my food for the first time, every step has been a rewarding challenge.
I’ve networked with many small business owners, chefs, and foodies along the way who have generously shared tips and insights to help my business grow. I’m excited for the future, with new projects, collaborations, and events on the horizon.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love Atlanta. Born and raised in Atlanta, well in Johns Creek area. Now have lived by the beltline for 4 years. I love the area and it’s constantly changing and growing with new restaurants, bars, etc,
A good lift at the gym. Then some lunch at Seans Harvest, Brooklyn Bagel, Sweet Green, Alons Bakery. The itinerary would include exploring the beltline. Perhaps stopping into Ponce City Market for shopping or bite to eat. Head to Piedmont park for arts festival or farmers market on Saturday mornings. Stop at a restaurant/bar with a nice patio to chill with appetizer and drinks in the afternoon. Like Lady Bird or Lingering Shade. In the evening, dinner at somewhere with a good environment and delicious food. Some of my favorites recently are Del Bar, Indaco, Alici, Ruby Chows, or Ela. Brunch or lunch the next day in Virginia Highlands. Check out a show at Fox Theatre. Afternoon coffee at Dancing Goat or Perc Coffee. Sandwiches from Victory’s or Bona Fide Deluxe. Play some pickleball. Stop for dessert at Jenni’s Ice Cream.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
A shoutout to my best friend, partner in life, and boyfriend who believed in me, assured me I could succeed, and encouraged me to start my own business. Without his support, I don’t know if I would have had the confidence to take the leap. My journey was also made easier by loving family and friends who enjoyed my food and believed in my vision.
On my phone, I have wallpaper featuring a simple quote that I often repeat to myself: “Good things take time.” It took nearly two years to reach this point, and throughout that journey, I kept reminding myself that I could do it, even if it took time. This quote was a constant source of inspiration, especially when it was easy to get caught up in self-doubt and feel like giving up.
