We had the good fortune of connecting with Jeanna Carie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jeanna, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business is “Legacy”. I never wanted to start a business off of the strength of clout and just to say “I have a business”. I literally thought about my purpose and what I was called to do and then the business came after. I buried both of my Parent’s recently and they left an inheritance and legacy to me and my older Brother. Building and starting my business & empire never hit so hard until after they left this earth. Building a legacy for my own family is on the top of my priority list. I also never want for me and my husband to ever want for anything. I want to add to his success. I am determined to be an asset and not a liability.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I currently own two businesses and I still work in corporate America. Crazy right? My first business that I started is J Carie Entertainment LLC. We are a full service entertainment consulting agency. I have had the pleasure of working with a few amazing celebrity clients such as Kirk Franklin, Raz B, Usher Raymond’s New Look Foundation, K Michelle, Chrisette Michelle, Ray J, and more. I originally moved to Atlanta because of my passion for the arts and entertainment. I am a singer and I also danced for a while. I’ve had the privilege of singing/working on projects such as Disney’s Harmonious Live, I have sung background for Gospel Artist Kierra Sheard, I recently filmed with Disney for their Christmas special and I was a backup singer for Michael Bolton, BET Music matters, and more. I then decided I wanted to work on the back end of entertainment so I landed an internship turned job at Bloc South Talent Agency. I made the connections, learned the business, and I then opened my own entertainment consulting agency.
I started working in Corporate America at the age 19 years old after I went to real estate school after high school. So business has always been apart of my existence. In my down season of entertainment, I decided to venture into the Property Management Field and I absolutely loved it. I started off as a leasing agent and the rest is history. I learned so much more about the real estate field. I did not want to work on Property anymore, but the passion for the business was still inside of me. My Father asked me before he passed away, what would I do with the inheritance if he passed away (My mother passed away first). I promised my Father that I would not blow the money and I would invest in real estate. I decided to take the route of starting my own Property Management Company. It is called ” Signature Property Group”. We are a luxury boutique property management company.
How did I get to where I am professionally today? I must say Jesus THEE Christ, much prayer, tears, grief, consistency, trial & error, failure, diligence, and faith. It was NOT an easy journey whatsoever. I faced so many obstacles, and it wasn’t just the business side it was in my personal life also. Life really hit me when I had to become a caretaker for my Parent’s and being in a different state. Trying to juggle being a caretaker, being their power of attorney, their provider, while still trying to hold a job, pay bills, pay their bills, run my one business at the time, and try to still live a normal life was so hard on me, but I made it.
I overcame a lot of these challenges by honestly really being in tuned with God. He is was the ONE person that helped me overcome a lot of the craziness in business and in life. I learned a lot of lesson a long the way. Two of the main things I learned is Faith is simple showing up. We often give up when things get tough, but God will always put his SUPER on your NATURAL doings (SUPERNATURAL). He just simply wants you to show up and I mean show up when things don’t look right. The second lesson I learned is that there is goodness on the other side of craziness. I don’t care what is looks like, you are ALWAYS going to win.
I want people to know that I take my brand serious because of my story. When you go through a lot, your brand becomes personal .
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Wow! ATL is full of some really dope things to do. I would take them to Six Flags, I am a roller coaster junky and so are most of my friends. We would most definitely hit up Phipps Plaza for sure because we are all shoppers. Food? That’s hard. There are sooo many places to eat. Slutty Vegan is one place, Chicago Pizza for sure. It’s a vibe! If we wanna go fancy, I would take them to Canoe. The food is AMAZING. For Drinks and Food, Fellaship ATL. Shoutout to my homeboy Cam Newton. His establishment is everything.
I would love to have to take my Bestie to the Georgia Aquarium and the Trap Museum.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to my late Parents Alton D. Sawyer Sr. and Connie P. Sawyer. They are the ones that molded and shaped me into the woman I am today. I also have to shoutout my former Pastor & First Lady. Pastor Karol Warren and 1st Lady Michelle Warren. They really played apart in raising me and also helping me cultivate my relationship with God. Being in church for my entire life kept me grounded and safe. Those two people played a HUGE role in my spiritual walk and personal growth.
