We had the good fortune of connecting with Jazmine Nichelle Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jazmine Nichelle, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
Moving to Los Angeles for film school, this decision actually happened before I decided to work for myself. I didn’t know that by pursuing an acting career, that I’d be working for myself. The decision to work for myself wasn’t on my agenda until almost 6 months after I graduated with my Master of Fine Arts degree.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’d like to consider myself an ART-tivist, because I’m very specific with everything that I’m apart of. I love telling stories that takes the time to peel back layers of people and encourage conversations that lead to healing. So my focus is usually based in doing as much character development and research as possible, whether writing or acting to make sure that this person comes alive, flaws and all. I think that providing an experience in the work is what sets me apart from others. As I’ve evolved into the woman that I am today, I’ve discovered so many things about myself and how I value my time. This has inherently made me more aware of what I choose to attach myself to. I’ve learned to yield to God’s voice so much more, that I’ve come to the realization that if whatever opportunity I am presented with doesn’t feel like an experience that is going to grow me, which will inadvertently grow others, then I do not want to be apart of it. This is the only way that I am able to operate at my fullest and highest capacity, and in turn the only way I can and will tell stories, I’m most proud of that. Finding who I am and what I stand for, because if you don’t, you will end up chasing your tail for awhile. I am the most excited about Platinum Storehouse! My husband and I just recently started our own production company! Our motto has always been, everything you need is in The Storehouse, so the name is befitting. I’m an Actress, Writer, Production Coordinator and my Husband is EVERYTHING! A Director, Writer, Actor, and Photographer, everything is literally in the storehouse. We thrive off of our God given gifts and I am proud of that. There are many lessons that I have learned along the way, the main one is to be patient and wait on God to move. The only thing I want the world to know about my brand and story is it is and will always be authentic.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well since I live in Los Angeles, I will share some of my favorite spots out here. We’re hanging out at the beach for sunset, preferably El Matador Beach, there is a cliffside spot where you can see what I call “God’s infinity pool” at sunset. It is amazing! We are definitely going to eat in Inglewood at Pann’s Restaurant and Simply Wholesome, because they are amazing. There is also an Indian restaurant that we’re gonna eat at in North Hollywood that is fire, Royal Curry Cafe. We are visiting the Broad and the infamous “Urban Light” installation for all their IG fulfillment requirements lol. Other than that we’re living and staying present so that their experience here is exactly what they need before they go back home.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Mom, Dad and my “Little” for being consistent with encouragement from the beginning! My husband, Paul Davis for keeping me focused and loving me through every disappointment I’ve endured so far, I love you. My North Carolina Family for pushing me to stay in LA and fight through every challenge and tribulation. Shanice Marshall and Billi Baker, Shanice encouraged me to chase after Theater and Billi provided me with resources to start out. Cheryl Bedford, my mentor and all of Women of Color Unite for encouraging me to advocate for myself and not allowing Hollywood create a caricature of me and my experiences. I love y’all!
