We had the good fortune of connecting with Jazmin Slaughter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jazmin, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
A Hint of Jazz Management started out as A Hint of Jazz, a multimedia edutainment platform. I wanted to create a platform for upcoming business owners, artists, and entrepreneurs to share their stories. I started because I dropped out of college and moved to a new city, then I said to myself, “I need to do something,” and my podcast was born. I produced over 100 podcasts with different creatives from Georgia to North Carolina, to Pennsylvania to New York. Networking, learning, and growing. This was from 2017 to 2020. When the pandemic hit, I couldn’t travel as much, and I had to pivot; I was also pregnant and needed to take it seriously because I didn’t want to take the wrong risks. I pivoted to work behind the scenes and got into MarComm & PR. It has been super exciting, and I have had even more opportunities based on my previous experience. Change is scary, but change can be good. Don’t be afraid to transition.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
A Hint of Jazz Management (AHoJ) develops and supports riveting public relations campaigns. Specializing in media relations strategies, AHoJ assists individuals and organizations with discovering their unique stories, which garners positive press coverage. Clients have earned key placement in prominent outlets, including Essence Magazine, The Root, and ABC.
At A Hint of Jazz Management, storytelling is crucial to our media relations services. We understand the importance of telling unique and authentic stories that can break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create positive change in people’s lives. By crafting compelling narratives, we help our clients connect with their target audience on a deeper level, building trust and loyalty.
A Hint of Jazz Management was born as a creative platform to dive into the why behind small businesses, artists, and entrepreneurs. When the pandemic hit in 2020, I became pregnant and pivoted to marketing & public relations. While AHoJ currently focuses on providing public relations services, we also work on creative projects and will be rereleasing our platform to shine a light on the why & motivation behind your great ideas.
The best lesson I have learned is to keep going; I still suffer from imposter syndrome and wonder if I’m good enough, but I have worked on national campaigns, and I do great work. Stop doubting yourself, always be a student, know your worth, and do the work.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate this shoutout to my daughter Kori. She inspires me to go harder. Following my dreams is important to me, but it is also important for her. I want to thank Cheryl Overton, who gave me my first job in this industry and has continued to support me throughout my journey. She is a powerhouse and a wonderful role model. I also dedicate this shoutout to Kevin Black, a fantastic filmmaker, creative, and friend. Follow Kevin on IG: @kevinenvy
