We had the good fortune of connecting with JAYO! and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi JAYO!, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I think the most important factor behind the success of my brand is originality, attention to details, consistency & expansion. I never wanted to develop a brand that was just locally-accepted or received in one place or by one type specific group of people. From the start i envisioned the world enjoying not only Sick Society Clothing’s garments, but each character’s story, evolving to comics, cartoons and becoming more then just clothing. Everything about Sick Society Clothing has meaning from the name of the brand that is actually an acronym to each character and logo having a story, a purpose driven streetwear clothing brand. People want more then to look fly (eventhough we wanna look fly first 🙂 ) we want purpose!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think the thing that sets Sick Society Clothing apart from other streetwear brands is the creativity in the pieces, from design, to fit, to color palettes, to range of items & how detail based each piece is. SSC is a brand that had been around because of its supporters and the age range of consumers from 24months-65+ years old. One of the things im the most proud about when it comes to my brand in the past couple of years has been its ability to grow, travel and make its way in front and into so many people’s closets and on there social media worn proudly purchased. As nice it is getting to where I currently am with the brand im nowhere near where im going but consistency got us here and discipline is gonna take us to the next level. The most important lesson I’ve learned has been to not give up along the way, you’re gonna take losses and you have to know how to take them in stride and make sure you win more then you lose and keep pushin. Sick Society Clothing is a legacy streetwear brand that will be around forever and as long as we are around design, quality & details will remain our focus.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Man. If you touchdown in Richmond, VA and i had to show you around the town i’d have you meet me at “The Top Floor” (3275 Mechanicsville Turnpike Richmond, VA 23223) which is the flagship location for SSC, Paid & Full and Swagg Apparel you know we gotta make sure if you moving throughout the city your threads together. From there we would hit the hottest barbershop in the city “Urban Lookz” get ya edgeup sharp from there we hittin my favorite brunch spot “Lunch.Supper!” Gotta eat good, then we’d prolly tap in at “Mona’s Lounge” kick it have a cigar relax, Get a little later for dinner hit “Mainstreet Steakhouse” prolly leave there go to “Ace’s sports lounge” and wrap the night up at the number one bar in the town “Liquid 2.0” have a few drinks before shootin over to the “Candy Bar”…well if it was a couple years ago lol nah thats it for one night. But while you in town we definitely would hit “Croaker’s Spot” and “Shula’s”
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I draw inspiration from so many people, places, things & life overall and if i had to name them all we would be here all day! But when i think about some of the most influential people to me when it comes to clothing i would have to note Pharrell Williams, Virgil Abloh, Nigo, KAWS, Dapper Dan, ‘Ye & my mama. Its so many more people i could name and want to but these are some of the people that literally shape my eyes when it came to the fashion world and what i consider to be culturally acceptable as dope creatives/visionaries.
