Meet Jaylin Murphy | Filmmaker & Editor

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jaylin Murphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jaylin, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Growing up I was always massively into the arts. I played in the band, sung in a choir, at one point I even considered acting. Although I was very aimless, I naturally gravitated towards mediums that most people would consider “creative”, but I never really thought of myself as a creative person for some reason.
It wasn’t until my senior year of high school where I realized that I wanted to pursue the arts as a potential career. At the time, I was taking a photography class, a fundamentals of art class, and a screenwriting class. Every week I looked forward to going to those classes the most, and by the end of the semester I decided that whatever I would do in life, it would be in the arts field.
It brought me joy in ways that cannot be described in words, like a longing feeling you chase over and over again. I liked the peace and community it gave me, so even when I didn’t specifically know where I wanted to land, I knew I wanted to belong in creative spaces.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My goal with creating any film or art, is to try and create something uniquely different in a way people may not have seen or thought of before. Even if it doesn’t always make the most sense, I strive to make something beautiful out of abstract ideas. Whether that be twisting a traditional narrative, writing a short film with no dialogue, or using a strange format to shoot with, filmmaking for me was always a playground to experiment with as many ideas as humanly possible.
What I want people to know is that I’m not necessarily trying to make the most perfect things, but I am trying to make something different. Although that can mean people feel mixed on the stuff I create, I am proud that they can at least walk away with something unexpected.
For a long time, I thought doing things this way would be more of a setback, and that I should prioritize a more traditional route if I want to keep a career. However, with time, and a lot of mistakes, I’ve come to learn that having a unique voice in the current landscape of art is much more valuable than the traditional. Like the many filmmakers and artists who have inspired my journey, I could inspire others by carving out my own unique perspective that will one day define itself as a particular style of art.
Building an original voice not only gave me more confidence in myself, but it left me with a skillset that no one could take away from me.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ah man, there’s so much to do that I don’t even know how we could fit it all! One thing for sure is to hit the beltline. It’s got so many place where you can grab drinks, hangout and eat, soak in the sun with a nice walk, etc. Easily my favorite spot in the city. Stone Mountain is also a nice place if you want to go hike and absorb some sun. One of my other favorite places in the whole city is the High Art Museum. They do a free visitation every second Sunday, and there’s always something new and interesting to check out whenever I go. For anyone that is really into art, it’s a must to take them there!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to dedicate this shoutout to my WOLF Radio family from the University of West Georgia. Quite frankly, I wouldn’t be where I am without them. They gave me confidence in my voice, taught me valuable lessons, and surrounded me with people I consider lifelong friends. Everything I wish to accomplish in life was built from the foundations of Michael and Shawn’s incredible leadership. If you guys end up reading this, thank you for all you have done for me!
