We had the good fortune of connecting with Jay Herring and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jay, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
I believe so far one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that entrepreneurship as a whole isn’t as easy as its viewed from the outside. Its really all in or nothing as far as the the dedication and background work that it takes in my field of work. Most people would view it as a freedom , in actuality it’s the furthest thing from it. Also stepping out of my comfort zone and utilizing elite networking skills can take you places money cannot. Its definitely important to be able to communicate and be able to adapt to different environments can be helpful on your path to success.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Im a photographer from a small city (Pontiac, MI) I would consider myself as a freelance photographer. I come from a family (grandparents) that were also photographers. My platform is definitely improving from when i first started back in 2017. I believe I got to the point Im at today because of the encouragement , my peers, the genuine support and the connections that have been made for me. On a business aspect the uprise on clients and the positive feedback on my quality of work lets me know that I’m going in the right direction. So far its not easy at all Im still working a regular job on top of running a business , I went a year straight not making a single dollar when i first started. I overcame all my challenges by taking it to the chin, being a man you know life will continue to move forward good or bad. I never complained , I invested and betted on myself to get to where Im at today, however Its still room for improvement and goals to meet. I think the most exciting moment for me was being able to fly out and go to Atlanta to take a tour of Cam Kirk Studios and meet the team. Unfortunately Cam wasn’t there that particular day but it was a great experience and opened my eyes even wider as a photographer . What I think sets me apart from others is my ability to capture moments in raw form. I actually do photography because it brings me peace to invest in a moment to share with the world. I did everything there is to do in my city and i want to expand to share my art and my story with the world.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Honestly where Im from its really not too much to do around the city. I might take a friend to try some Famous Egg Rolls from Seoul Rolls. Ice Cream From Frosty Treat. Might take a drive downtown Detroit Hit a Museum Grab some food from a nice restaurant . Bar hop in that area for drinks. hit the riverwalk for a view of the Canadian border and just vibe .
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
