We had the good fortune of connecting with Jasmine Ringo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jasmine, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Before opening up my bakery, I was a freelance makeup artist for close to 19 years. It was natural for me to float around like a butterfly and not be held down to working for someone else. I always wanted to get paid for my talents and make other people happy and excited with my work. Starting my own business was just a no brainer.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My brand was born out of a nagging dream and good hard push from Covid. Once we went into lockdown early 2020, I had a moment to pause and think about what the heck I was going to do financially and for my happiness. I had just wrapped the show Lovecraft Country on HBO and had no clue (none of us knew) when it would be safe to go back to work – especially because we worked so closely in people’s faces and mucus membranes which was clearly so dangerous with covid. I thought, is this is? Will I never do makeup again? I knew I had to really try this baking thing out, a love born in Paris while I was working for a major cosmetics brand. So I got to work and dumped all my savings into it. I got licensed and studied and made so much baked treats it was ridiculous. I gave them to the people I knew were still going to work places and shared the love. It work. People were calling me up and asking me to create cakes for birthdays and loved ones and just to celebrate life in a sense. We were all so sad and lonely and food was connecting us. Food was giving people happiness that my makeup career had never done before. I think I am able to touch people in a much more positive and exciting way than I could before. Plus, my art background just helped me grow so quickly in the field. Oh is it a big new field! Because apparently I wasn’t the only one that turned on their oven during lockdown!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First up for brekkie, we must stop by Buttermilk Kitchen. They have literally the best jumbo crunchy and buttery biscuits, homemade red pepper jelly jam and blueberry basil jam and literally everything is made from impeccable ingredients and local brands. You can’t go wrong, but get there early because they’re always packed! I don’t drink, so sorry, I can’t suggest any cool bars and hangouts. I prefer a cool indie theater like The Springs Cinema, or visit one of the many beautiful parks in the city. I’m a new mom now, so my preference in hang outs and places has changed to help enrich her experience of the world. We miss traveling so much and gain so much perspective and love when we can freely do that. Only time will tell when we can feel more comfortable to explore not only our city, but the world around us again. Until then, we enjoy the High museum, visiting Summerhill and Piedmont Park.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband is beyond the most supportive and motivating person behind my business. He is always there to listen to my complaints or celebrate my successes and help pick me up when I’ve stumbled through my own doubt and insecurities. He is my rock through and through. He also gifted me my love, my baby girl, who is now my motivating factor to continue to build my brand and success. They make everything worth it.
