We had the good fortune of connecting with Jared Winston and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jared, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
If what you’re pursuing is still worth the work you’re putting in and the sacrifices you’re making then don’t stop. If you have to, take a step back to look at what you’re doing and what you want to accomplish and ask yourself if you can live with giving up on what you’re pursuing. If not, then you keep going.

The one thing I’ve noticed between a lot of successful people whether they be in music, art, or business is that they’re relentless in their self promotion. To put it more plainly, they show up. They show up everyday whether they want to or not and share their work or put themselves out there.

So if the one thing standing between me and being successful is simply showing up everyday then I’ll do just that. I can figure everything else out on the way.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m currently working on a personal project which I hope to share soon. I’m really excited about all of the directions this project can go so that’s what I’m most excited about at the moment. It will be the first art project I’ve come up with for my photography so I hope that it resonates with the people that see it.

I’m most proud of the growth I’ve seen in my photography throughout the last few years. I’ve been pushing myself to be more consistent with the quality of my work and now Im transitioning into a more creative direction with the projects I have upcoming.

I’ve got to where I am now simply by being curious. There’s so much free information out there so I kept asking questions and sometimes finding new ways to ask the same question. I’ve learned that sometimes it’s not what you’re being told but how you’re being told that determines your ability to understand a concept. Beyond that, there’s not always one specific way to capture an image or moment which is what I love about photography. You can get a desired outcome in a multitude of ways, you just have to find what works best for you.

What I want the world to know about me is that I ultimately want to be a resource for other photographers who have questions and make the dialogue around learning photography less daunting. We all have a unique perspective no matter what we feel our skill level is at so I’d love to create a space or platform someday where people can learn and ask questions.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
It’s hard to say because there’s so much to do in Atlanta. There’s always something new or an event going on. Food-wise, we’re definitely making a stop at Ponko Chicken. I always love the interactive exhibits at the Pullman Yards so maybe go there if there’s something going on. If not, Im always down to go see a Braves game.

Overall I think I’d just end up having us pick a spot for the day that has some breweries, restaurants and shops where we can walk around and have fun.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother deserves a lot of the credit. She used to take all of my sports pictures as a kid and eventually bought me my first camera. Without her encouragement and support to take up photography I don’t know if I ever would have.

My brother also inspired me to get into photography. He took it up before I did and ultimately led me to start taking it more seriously. I love all of the conversations we’ve had over the years about the pictures we’ve taken and techniques we’ve learned. It’s a great feeling to share a passion you have with someone you love.
