We had the good fortune of connecting with Jarah Murraine and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jarah, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?

When I first began my Entrepreneurial journey I worked long hours. I would start my work day at 9am and not go home sometimes until 1am the next day. I was “on my grind.” I was trying to get my name and services that I offered out to the public. I was willing to work late and do whatever I had to do to grow my clientele. As my business and my family grew, my perspective changed. I could no longer work late into the next morning. I began to set boundaries — I stopped offering certain services due to the timing and started referring clients to other stylists. As I grew as an entrepreneur and I opened more businesses, I started to get overwhelmed especially during the pandemic shut down. I was working and home-schooling my children. It was a lot to balance. I felt like my mental health was at risk because of the stress and anxiety. I was running four businesses and I just need a mental break. About six months after everything opened back up, I closed my salon for a week and took time for myself. During that time away, I had so much peace; it was a wake-up call for me. I now only offer hair services parttime, I have designated times for each business. I’ve learned to say no and not feel guilty about it. Now I understand that balance is something you create, not something you find. When you find balance, you find peace.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

My businesses are HBJ Glam Studio Salon & Boutique, HBJ Glam Hair care Products, LLC., Eat Heal Live, LLC. All of them are self-care brands that consist of improving from the inside out.

At the young age of 15, I began doing my own hair. That later turned into me doing other people’s hair. After college life, my passion grew even more, I realized doing hair was no longer a hobby but it was a God-given talent that I should seriously pursue.

After getting laid off from my last job in 2011, I decided to attend cosmetology school full-time. Upon becoming a licensed cosmetologist in 2012, I began to build my brand. I launched my virgin hair extension line, HBJ Glam Extensions in 2013. By doing so I was able to give my clients access to premium grade hair extensions. After two years of working in various salons, I opened my first salon, HBJ Glam Studio salon suite to better serve my faithful and growing clientele.

Not long after, I transitioned from my salon suite into a full service salon and boutique in 2015, HBJ Glam Studio Salon Boutique, where I offer beauty services and operate a clothing & hair extensions boutique. I later launched my plant based hair care products line,HBJ Glam Hair-care Products in 2016, and in 2019 I launched my own hair tool, The Straightener- a titanium flat Iron. I changed my lifestyle to become an alkaline vegan in 2017, my research and dedication to that lifestyle grew into me going back to school to receive my Holistic Nutritionist Certification so I can educate and assist others with transitioning to a healthier lifestyle.

Eat Heal Live, LLC is a holistic health & wellness business. The mission of Eat Heal Live is to promote consciousness and holistic healing through spirituality, alkaline herbs, and foods. I offer a number of services from herbs, sea moss, vegan lifestyle coaching to consulting and cooking classes. HBJ Glam Hair Care Products, LLC is a plant based hair care line, our products are made with the highest quality of organic ingredients and designed to strengthen and grow all hair types which also includes a plant based men’s care line, Made for A King

I also provide business coaching for upcoming entrepreneurs, giving them the blueprint to run a successful business.

I am the most excited about the people I’ve impacted as an entrepreneur. I’ve helped people heal from the inside out. It is truly satisfying to see a “happy customer,” because seeing a satisfied customer’s smile is beyond gratifying for me. Lessons learned along the way are to be patient and determined. Success does not come overnight. Everything happens in perfect timing. There were many things I wanted for my business that kept failing for me because the timing was not right. I believe God blesses us with what we need when he sees fit. Everything happens for a reason.

I have gotten where I am by the grace of God, believing in myself and just going for it. On my journey of entrepreneurship, I have overcome challenges by reminding myself that those challenges are only temporary.

I want the world to know that anything is possible so take the leap of faith and pursue your dreams.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

I provide services in both Atlanta, Ga., and Tallahassee, Fla.

For both cities I would take them to some hidden gems. For the Atlanta area, I would take my friend to the Krog Street Tunnel to view art and to the Krog Street Market to shop with the amazing vendors. We would enjoy a drive thru movie at Star Light Drive-in Theater. I would schedule a guided bike tour of the Atlanta beltline. We would eat a healthy and delicious meal at Alkaline King and enjoy vegan desserts from Hebrew Bakes. We would share some laughs at Comedy at Uptown Comedy Club and go hiking at Vickery Creek Trail at Roswell Mill and view the beautiful spillway waterfall in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.

In Tallahassee, I would take my guest to Cascades Park, enjoy the view of the park and indulge in food and drinks at the Edison Restaurant. For live entertainment I would take them to Tallahassee Nights Live (live music production featuring some Jazz, R&B, Soul, Pop, Latin, Country, Rock, HipHop, Dance, Poetry and Comedy). Let’s say they visiting during football season–my friend and I would attend a FAMU football game and enjoy the halftime show with the Marching 100. We would enjoy dinner at Eve’s on Adams open air balcony. Take a day trip to Panama City Beach which is about two hours from Tallahassee. While there; we would enjoy shopping, going to the beach, and attend one of the Dolphin shows.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
God, my parents, and my children.

God for blessing me with the gift and the calling to be an entrepreneur.

My parents, for believing in me and supporting all of my endeavors. No matter what they have always been in my corner.

My children, for encouraging me, motivating me to keep going when I wanted to give up. They unknowingly inspire me to be a better version of myself in soo many ways.
