We had the good fortune of connecting with Janisa Camille and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janisa Camille, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Doula of the Divine was created off the strength of me becoming what I needed for myself during my pregnancy and postpartum journey. I became a doula and ultimately made it a brand because I felt if I was going to be answering something I considered to be a calling it was going to be something that not just fed my soul but gave back to my community of BIPOC.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Doula of the Divine is a mother committed to guiding you through your preconception, birth and postpartum journey founded by myself, Janisa Camille; dedicated to melanated births and making sure these mothers have a safe pregnancy and birth, that offers constant mental, emotional, and spiritual support throughout your divine birth journey. Each service is offered to each wombyn based on their birth needs. By doing that, I provide you with resources, to address any needs you may have during this divine time. Doula of the Divine focuses on birthing with mind, body & spirit through mindfulness, movement, tradition & wisdom.
To be quite honest, my first year of being a doula I completed a total of 33 births, birth work just came natural for me, booking clients came natural, doing the work became 2nd nature.
I’ve learned through birthwork and dealing one on one with clients the art of listening and just learning to flow and not control. I had to start my own self work to be able to be the anchor for mothers in the most sensitive time in their lives. Now with learning and healing more for self I was able to not only be there for my clients but also be a north star to my fellow doulas.
Ultimately I want Doula of the Divine to be able to have our hands in a bit of everything in the community dealing with birth work, such as opening a shelter, more black birth worker events (such as my annual black birth workers brunch), continuing on with my quarterly mentorship for doulas when it comes to leaning how to make it a profitable business while still remaining true to the doula you are and why you chose this work.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well im an earth sign so im content with being in nature like piedmont park, Cascade springs, Hahn woods, and Winn park or just relaxing in a space with people where I feel most grounded.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
my shoutout goes to all of my clients, who trusted me on their journey to and through the most sacred and divine time of their lives, becoming and being a mother.
to my son, who gives me no choice but to find the balance and gives me the motivation and love to fill my cup every single day.
to my interns, birth worker community, and mentees thank you for the continued support, always.
