We had the good fortune of connecting with Janiece Jenkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Janiece, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley, California. Being 20 minutes from the heart of LA, the beach, the desert, and the mountains – I grew up in paradise so my upbringing was a unique melting pot of different cultures and activities. I had communities everywhere, whether it was my soccer and track team, my church, or my big family. When I left for college, I never really went back but community remained important to me so I made sure to create or contribute towards it no matter where my Sagitarrius Sun and Mercury took me.
This is how Witness in Color was created, a consulting company I created to witness incredible people doing incredible things! It started with being able to apply my project management and creative skills to the dreams of the people I love and has expanded into something that will help all innovators take the first step to making their ideas a reality.
I believe everyone has a skill, offering or idea that deserves to be conjured into this reality. Community care is the only thing that will save us in the end, so I truly believe that taking care of each other, making sure each individual understands what they’re bringing to the whole, and playing off of each other’s strengths will continue to push the needle of progress forward.
Balanced and healthy communities are just that when each individual understands their contribution, so it’s my honor to provide dreamers the resources to find their lane. Growing up in the San Fernando Valley opened my eyes to so much as a child, so yes I believe there is enough success and wealth to go around. Everyone wins when the individual is their best self.
The communities I grew up in poured into me as a child with so much love and compassion, so it’s truly my honor to pour this kind of attention into my clients!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Witness in Color is a consulting company for those looking for resources to grow in their business or creative projects. In this space, I’m able to combine my creative and project management skills to help clients reach their next level of success.
Small business owners are where my passion lies because support during important business transitions are invaluable. Patience is needed to define the vision, massage it until all the kinks are out, and make sure systems are in place for growth.
I never imagined entrepreneurship would look like this for me until I realized I really enjoy problem-solving. I have a BA in business administration and a certificate in enterprise systems, so I had set my eyes on project management because this didn’t constrict me to a specific industry or business model. After working with a start-up and helping it grow to a seven-figure business within one year, I also realized I have various skills needed to provide a holistic strategy to help entrepreneurs define what growth looks like to them as well as the plan to get there.
After working with that start-up for about four years, they were at a point of being acquired and I felt like I did my job. I was also freelancing on the side doing graphic design and copywriting, so I decided to transition to full-time entrepreneurship and create Witness in Color. This has allowed me to help more entrepreneurs and build a team that is able to serve them in a greater capacity through website building, brand establishment, social media management, marketing, and more.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned along the way is to continue saying yes. I learned what a solid yes and solid no in my body feels like, and I trusted that feeling. Because of this, I’ve had nonstop opportunities come my way that have allowed me the freedom to travel, work with various industries, and meet amazing connections along the way. This is my definition of success, and I couldn’t be happier.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love intimate settings that allow space for good food and conversation, so I’d take them to The Gathering Spot – a Black-owned shared workspace for innovators. We would get some work done because the responsibilities of an entrepreneur never stop, enjoy a drink or dinner because the menu is fire, and then check out what events they’re hosting that evening.
I love being outside, so we would also hit a trail or two. If we’re staying in the city, we would go to Cascade Nature Preserve to keep it simple. But since they’ll be here for a week, we have to hit Northern Georgia. About an hour and a half to two hours north, once can find the most amazing waterfalls and hikes. If they’re down for an adventure, we’d hit Panther Creek Falls, a 7-mile roundtrip hike that opens up to the most beautiful waterfall and camping ground.
We would then treat ourselves to Spa Land up in Duluth to enjoy massages, sauna rooms, and other treatments. Depending on the week, we would head to The Underground ATL to enjoy art and local talents. I paint so I’ve enjoyed being around the art community in Atlanta and participating in events.
Okay, so to end the trip I’d make sure we hit American Deli so they can enjoy a classic ATL meal of wings and fries with some Peach soda, then head to Hotel Claremont rooftop to enjoy a locally crafted beer while watching the sunset. The vibes get no better than this!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my Grandma, Sheila <3
You’ve done so many courageous, beautiful things in this lifetime and It’s been an honor being your granddaughter. You are the OG risk taker, so I appreciate your unwavering support in all my endeavors as we continue to build upon your legacy.
