We had the good fortune of connecting with Janelle Martinez-Cruz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Janelle, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m Cuban and Puerto Rican, born in the beautiful town of Kendal, Florida. Being fully raised as a Cuban girl was the best thing ever. There’s always constant music, art, and dancing. This affected everything I did because all I wanted to do was share my culture with others. I used my art as that outlet. I want to share more behind what’s it’s like as a Cuban gal in the South.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me and my art apart from others is my love for flowing watercolor and detailed ink florals. I love using color and exploring different mediums too! It took me a while to get where I am. Wouldn’t have been able to do it without my family and their constant support. It wasn’t easy. I had many tell me being an artist and an equestrian was impossible but, I never gave up. I’ve learned to drown out opinions and only give attention to the ones that truly matter. Even then, stay positive and never look back. I want to share joy, art, and a little Latin flare with my art and influence. My brand revolves around being who you are and embracing your talents no matter what people may say. My goal is to bring positivity and joy to others!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Literally love this question so much! I love the city and where I am now, Atlanta, GA.

My favorite places to go and visit are the Aquarium, where I train as an equestrian, and the Coca-Cola Museum. They’re all places that revolve around my love of bright colors, animals, and design inspiration. Also, I would literally take everyone to all the coffee places in the city. As a coffee addict, that’s a must! My current favorite is Daily Dose and the coffee island at Ponce City Market.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
