We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamie Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I was constantly doing or creating something since I was very young, always working towards my own little business. So an entrepreneur from day one. When I went to school to peruse my interior design degree, I knew I wanted to eventually have my own design business 100%. It was the natural end game for me. One of the biggest driving factors behind finally making the jump to start Krywicki Interior Design was starting a family and having the flexibility to make my own schedule.

What should our readers know about your business?
Krywicki Interior Design is a small boutique interior design studio with projects across the country. We take on a specific number of projects each year that we feel we can excel at both in commercial and residential. We have a specific style that I deem as classic modern, but we truly design toward whatever our client wants, putting our flare on whatever the style. Our bread and butter is multi-family/student housing amenity spaces and high-end residential, but we’re breaking into retail and hospitality. I started my business in 2015 while still working full-time. I worked weekends and nights, really whatever it took. I knew that if my 5 year plan was to start a family and simultaneously starting my own business, I wanted to make sure I had a jump start on learning the ins and outs of running a business, getting my name out there, and gaining a solid clientele. Was it easy? No way! I sacrificed time with my husband and still do when project deadlines are looming or clients can only meet after business hours. There truly is no such thing as a vacation or maternity leave, you have to always be available, even when you have employees. But that in itself is the biggest challenge, balancing work and life. Have I figured it out? Not entirely, but I try to not work at night or the weekends and save that time for myself and my family, because stepping away makes me a better designer and business owner.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned along the way is to surround yourself with a team of people that help make your life easier. Find yourself the accountant, the graphic designer, the lawyer, the photographer, stylist, employees, whoever, that allow your business to succeed. It takes an army to feel like you can have balance and to enjoy what you do.

What do I want the world to know about me? That I’m a 32 year old, with three kids, working a job I love, owning a successful business and I did it all by myself. I don’t ever give myself credit or a pat on the back and maybe it’s time. I’ve won two IIDA Best of the Best awards this past year beating out huge ATL firms and that was one of the best feelings in the world. My brand name- Krywicki is my maiden name. I’m 100% polish and the name is very unique and quite google-able, so it felt natural to keep the name in some capacity. We just went through a brand re-fresh and I’m very excited to roll it out in 2022. My design dream is to design a restaurant and boutique hotel, so if your dream is to build one, call us!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite places to take people are Ponce City Market, the Battery, and West Side Provisions. I always find myself at Ford Fry’s Restaurants- Saint Cecelia, King and Duke, the Optimist, Marcel. Mostly because the atmosphere at all of his restaurants is phenomenal and the food is always great. Biltong Bar at Ponce is one of my favorites for a drink, Antico by far is where I’m at on a pizza night and Jenni’s at West Side provisions is my go-to for dessert.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to give credit to my husband, Nick. I wouldn’t be able to have my business and my family without him. He truly allows me to have the career I’ve always dreamed of.
