We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamie Kirk and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamie, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?

Process 2 Success LLC is a mental health and wellness organization dedicated to providing essential tools and resources to assist those struggling with maintaining their mental health. Our mission is to increase awareness, support and empower communities of color who are disproportionately affected by mental health struggles.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), black people make up only 13% of the United States population but account for nearly 20% of those living with a mental illness. This is a significant disparity that cannot be ignored. Additionally, according to the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, suicide rates in communities of color among black males aged 10-19 have increased by 60% since 2017. This alarming statistic highlights the dire situation faced by black communities when it comes to mental health. Several factors can contribute to the disproportionate impact of depression on black communities. One major factor is the discrimination, microaggressions, and unequal access to opportunities and resources can take a toll on one’s mental health.

Growing up in the diverse and bustling city of Los Angeles during the 80s and 90s was a unique experience. The crack epidemic and gang violence that plagued the city during this time were hard to ignore, especially for someone like me who grew up in one of the most affected communities. As a person of color, I was exposed to the systemic challenges that often lead to various traumas within these communities. Neglect, molestation, physical abuse, rape, and abandonment were all too common occurrences that shaped the lives of many individuals.

My personal experience was no exception. My father, a known gang member, passed away when I was just five years old due to pneumonia. As for my mother, she fell victim to crack addiction and ended up being homeless. These were just some of the challenges I faced growing up, and they had a profound impact on my life. As a result of these traumatic experiences, I found myself struggling with suicidal thoughts during my teenage years. Unfortunately, back then, resources for mental health support were not as readily available as they are today. Therapy was not something that was commonly talked about, and there was very little support for those struggling with mental health issues. In the end, it was just me and my faith in God that helped me through those difficult times. But looking back, I can’t help but wonder how different things could have been if I had access to the resources and support that are now available. That’s why I am passionate about raising awareness on the importance of mental health and advocating for better access to resources and support, especially within communities of color. No one should have to go through what I went through alone.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As someone who is originally from California, I have always been interested in exploring new places and experiencing different cultures. When I first moved to Atlanta, one of the things that immediately caught my attention was the vibrant small business community. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of locally owned businesses scattered throughout the city. From cozy coffee shops to unique boutiques, there seemed to be something for everyone. One particular area that stood out to me was the New Black Wallstreet in Lithonia. This community is a hub for black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs. What initially drew me to this place was their free business workshops. As someone who is passionate about entrepreneurship and helping others succeed, I was excited to see the resources available for aspiring business owners.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Something that I have learned in life, is to focus on those who are there rather than those who are not. This lesson has been especially true for me when it comes to my sisterhoods: The Distinguished Ladies Circle and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. I owe a lot of my growth to these two sisterhoods, which have supported me, challenged me, and helped me become the woman I am today.
The Distinguished Ladies Circle is a sisterhood based in Los Angeles, California, dedicated to empowering women through sisterhood and providing acts of kindness to those in need in our community. Through this circle, I have been able to connect with incredible women who have shared their experiences, wisdom, and support with me. The friendships I have formed within this circle have been invaluable, and I am grateful for the sisterhood that we have created together.
Similarly, my experience with Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. has been instrumental in my personal growth. This sorority is founded on the principles of scholarship, service, sisterhood, and finer womanhood. Through my involvement in Sigma Eta Zeta Chapter, I have had the opportunity to serve my community, develop my leadership skills, and build meaningful relationships with my sisters.
Both The Distinguished Ladies Circle and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. have taught me the importance of lifting each other up, supporting and empowering one another, and creating a strong sisterhood. These lessons have not only helped me grow as an individual but also allowed me to pay it forward by being there for others in need.
I am grateful for the love, guidance, and support that I have received from these two amazing sisterhoods. They have truly shaped me into the woman I am today, and I will continue to carry their values and principles with me throughout my life.
