We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamie Coleman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamie, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I’m all for taking risks and am confident in betting on myself. In full transparency, I’m actually more scared of the regret of not trying something versus the actual outcome of the risk at hand. I can make peace with having tried and learned it wasn’t for me (and have probably met some dope people and/or gained wisdom along the way), but I couldn’t live with this shoulda, coulda, woulda in my heart forever. I say the above with as much grace as possible. A lot of my earlier risks in life came as last resorts as opposed to me being able to proactively choose. However in taking those risk and seeing how all things have come together to grow me into who I am today, I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. I have learned that what’s for you will always find its way to you regardless, that those who are for you will support and pour into you differently, and on the other side of fear is purpose. I say all this to say- don’t believe the noise taking up space in your life. You are the signal. Take the risk and bet on yourself.
What should our readers know about your business?
Culture Therapy is a community rooted in collective stories. It is a created space where people are able to build, connect, and exchange in their individual truths while gaining a system of support along their journey. In most situations, we often don’t share our stories because we are ashamed, aren’t aware of what’s happening, or believe people don’t care for what we have to say; which can cause us to isolate ourselves when community is ACTUALLY what’s needed. I am to provide that. What started off as a passion project in 2019 with a podcast, ‘In the Midst Of’ which follows a group of friends who openly share their stories and discover healing and revelations, has expanded into workshops, workbooks, and even a bi-weekly newsletter that reaches about 3,000 people. Over the past couple of years, what I have learned is that we as people are all just trying to figure it out and really have no clue as to what we’re doing. Most of us are really just looking for safe spaces to learn to be more human and how to be more gentle with ourselves. The only goal I had was to create something that people could learn from and not feel so alone in their personal journey through life. I grew a lot in faith and in confidence because much of what exist today, was beyond my wildest dreams and could only be because of God. Because of this, I’m excited to see how Culture Therapy continues to evolve!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I personally love coffee shops and being outside in nature. In a week worths of time, coffee shops I’d have us stop buy would definitely be Cold Brew Bar for the ascetics, Urban Grind for a comedy night, Hodgepodge for a blueberry muffin ( I loveeee them), and Read Shop because I love the fact its a book store and a coffee shop. Food places I’d have to take them in no particular order would consist of Jamrock Jerk Center, Nina and Rafi’s pizza, Playa Bowls ( I love acai bowls), Maple Street Biscuit Company, Milk and Honey, and Kelz Kitchen. For drinks and a good time I’d definitely go to Garden Room (if you can get a reservation), The Lawrence, Suite Food Lounge, Ubar, Foxtrot, and Whiskey Blue. Places and or things that are musts for me – afternoon tea at the St.Regis, walking around either Little Five Points, the Belt Line, or The Battery, attending Yoga on the Field at the Home Depot backyard, hiking Stone Mountain, and take a day trip to drive to either Amicolola Falls or the Tallulah Falls. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am so grateful to be supported by an amazing group of family and friends. I’d like to thank my grandparents for instilling in me faith, my parents for the commitment to my hobbies and interests over the years, and my friends for inspiring me to reach beyond my own limits.
