We had the good fortune of connecting with James ‘PJ’ Spraggins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi James ‘PJ’, what do you attribute your success to?
The most important factor to my success is the fact that I try to remain true to myself. I don’t make decisions to please other people.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a drummer & I write and produce my own music. I think what sets me apart from other artists is that I compose music from a different perspective as it relates to being a musician. People expect pianists, saxophonists & other traditional lead instrumentalists to compose their own music. However, many people don’t expect a drummer to be able to do it. I’m most proud of the fact that, by God’s grace, I’ve been able to make a living doing what I absolutely love to do. Although, it hasn’t been easy by any stretch of the imagination. Just like anyone else on a specific journey, I’ve had to overcome adversities and challenges along the way. Definitely made a lot of sacrifices. But, all in all, I’m happy with where I am in life right now because I’ve maintained my character and integrity. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in my life is to not let the actions of anyone else get me out of character. I’ve tried to be in control of my emotions at all times. What I’d like the world to know about me is I believe music is very powerful and we as musicians should use that power to help people heal. That’s the purpose behind my purpose.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend visiting ATL I’d definitely take them to one of my favorite venues, St James Live! They have great food, service & shows! The drinks are fantastic as well! My favorite is the Georgia Peach. Of course you gotta check out the Georgia Aquarium as well. If you like breakfast/brunch like me, eating at places like The Breakfast Brothers & Barney’s is a must!

My parents, James & Hiawatha Spraggins, deserve all the credit. Their support throughout my life has been unwavering.
