We had the good fortune of connecting with James Mahkween and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi James, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have so many creative friends who dance and choreograph. I wanted to create something that would help them to have a platform to present work. I’m also a choreographer and of course I want to share too! But there’s so many showcases, concerts, and events. How do I stand out! I decided to create a project that would have a different theme every show. Creating a space where artist and audience can connect on a single subject.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I believe my energy/ passion sets me part from others. My ability to connect with people in a true genuine sense getting others to believe in me and what I’m aiming to do with my creativity. I’m an extreme hustler! Thats what I’m proud of! if I see something I want I get it. I create it. You have one life to be your most creative and I don’t want to miss a moment. It’s not easy especially it just being me and my friend Thomas Davis handling everything together. He’s been with me since the beginning! I’ve learned a lot. One of the biggest things I’ve learned is “you can take the long road it’s doesn’t have to be down the street!” Meaning giving yourself time to marinate on your creative ideas so it can flourish at its fullest. The community will always be there.i want people to know that Im dedicated to the arts and I will do my best to create ways to support my fellow artists being dance, singing, painting, music, poetry etc. Im always interested in collaborating with other artists and venues!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I definitely want to shoutout my Lula Washington Dance Theater Family! Being under Lula and Tamica Washington truly transformed my life internally and externally. They came with open arms. Dancing for them, teaching classes, assisting with outside activities, offering me space to develop my creativity as a dancer and choreographer the list goes on and on. I truly have so much love for them it’s unexplainable. Being with them I’ve gained amazing lifelong friendships and mentors! The truly helped sculpted a big part of me becoming the dancer that I’ve become!
Definitely want to show big love to Imani Harris she created a space for me in creativity and spiritually! I got a lot of internal healing being with her!
As well as Pat Taylor. Dancing for her company Jazzantiqua was truly a time I won’t forget. Gaining knowledge in Jazz and its rich history. Gaining beautiful friendships.
I have much love for all these people and am grateful for them!
