We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamal Wright and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jamal, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I remember while I was in college that I had no idea how to break into the game industry. I would apply to studios and honestly feel intimidated. Requirements would either ask for 5+ years experience or having shipped a game. While I’ll always be fascinated by games other studios make, I know I wanted to create my own characters and tell my own stories. And that is how Moonryse Studios came to be!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think the one thing that sets me apart from others is my unique ability to tell stories. I have a vivid imagination and a mind that never sleeps.
Right now, I’m still most proud of releasing my first game. I announced a sequel to it so that will probably change once it’s released hahaha. The path to releasing my first game wasn’t easy, but it’s been a joy to learn new things along the way. I overcame most of my obstacles with patience and help from other developers within the game development community. One of the key lessons I’ve learned is how important marketing is. It was interesting to find out how some of the newer social media platforms can affect your game’s sales. That’s a free gem to any other developers that read this!
I want the world to know that Jamal Wright is in this space and to be on the lookout for many new games coming from Moonryse Studios in the future.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is an excellent question! My favorite place in the city is Joystick! The vibe is amazing. You can’t go wrong with excellent drinks and old school video games!
Now say it’s the weekend. I’m all for a fun brunch, I would tell anyone to go to Corner Tavern in Little Five Points. Their waffles are amazing as well as their bottomless mimosas! If you’re looking for afternoon or early evening bite, next I would recommend Sweet Hut for their tasty treats and boba tea.
If you’re looking for a place to game and be around other gamers, I would recommend Epic PC Lounge in Duluth. It’s always a fun time!
A few notable mentions are Sublime Doughnuts, Jinya Ramen Bar, Monkey 68, Titan Games and Comics, and the best place to get a haircut, All Edge Barbershop and Salon!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The first person I want to give a shoutout to is one of my best friends, Pablo Lasalle Rivera. I absolutely would not have made it to where I am now if it weren’t for him. He’s had back during the lows of this journey and always kept me motivated. Sadly he passed away this past September. Not a day goes by that I don’t think about him. His spirit and passion for video games will always be with me as I continue down this road.
Secondly, I want to give thanks again to the community I have on Twitch. Whether mentioning my game or playing it on stream, they’ve had my back as well. So for all the Twitch viewers out there, be sure to follow and subscribe to TGIKendra, N3ku, Melaninandespressos, JacindaHexx, Ibonimoon, and DaroFromTarget!
