We had the good fortune of connecting with Jalil and Starr Roberts and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jalil and Starr, what matters most to you?
Our coffee shop is named after the sixth principle of Kwanzaa, Kuumba.

Kuumba is a commitment to being creative within the context of the national community vocation of restoring our people to their traditional greatness and thus leaving our community more beneficial and beautiful than we, i.e., each generation, inherited it.

What should our readers know about your business?
The foundation of our business is being committed to service excellence. We treat everyone who walks through our doors as though they were invited guests visiting our home.

We opened in 2020, months after our initial opening date due to CoVid. Since that time we’ve seen months were we paid out much more than we brought in, operated short staff, and had unexpected building maintenance expenses. Through those hardships we’ve stayed laser focused on the mission, serving people in an excellent manner. Our faith in God and our support from our tight knit Kuumba Coffee community members is what sustains us.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So we would intentionally keep it local Douglasville. We would start our days at Kuumba Coffee for coffee, tea, smoothies and breakfast or lunch. Definitely head over to Hatrimony to meet Jordan and get a custom fedora. We would also visit Andriona at Douglasville Books for the latest good reads, Kayla and Mrs. Stephanie at the Place of Kai for oxygen bar and salt cave, Samekh and Samantha at Hermana’s Italian Water Ice for a cool treat, Tanaisha at Be Beautifully True and Adrienne at Twelve Chic for some retail therapy, Kelly at Sew Me Crazy and Rasheeda at The Burlap Rose for custom fits and I would show off Michelle at Mainstreet Co-Working Flo’s new spot and meet Dee and KD at Royal Fades barbershop. Other places we would eat in downtown Douglasville would be Blu Rose Bistro, High Noon Eatery, Gumbeaux’s, Red Velvet Bistro, Tito’s and Fabiano’s. For the best Eggplant Parmesan we would head over to meet Armando at Sam and Roscoe’s and stop by Iced Topped Bakery and Table 25 Fork + Wine.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Starr’s parents, Henry and Crystal are integral to the success of Kuumba. They are our business partners financially and they also work alongside Jalil at the shop.
