We had the good fortune of connecting with Jae Daisy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jae, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I chose to pursue an artistic career because I’ve always dreamed of changing the world. Although I was very interested in poetry, fashion, and photography throughout my childhood and teen years, it was painting that allowed me to connect with people in ways that left me fulfilled. Many people throughout my journey(Career) have expressed to me the healing, inspiration and love they feel while experiencing my art. My creations allow people to see themselves and the world around them differently. That to me, is how I can change the world. By putting my heart into my work, I’m able to connect with people on that level. Knowing that I’ve created a community doing what I truly love, art doesn’t even feel like a career. It feels like purpose.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Every painting I’ve created, I have always seen a vision in my mind first before I began to paint. One way I experience God and feel the most peace is through Mother Nature. The relationship between my portraits and the nature that surrounds them is how I express what I am feeling within. I’m proud to say that by me putting myself into my work, I’ve been able to touch so many people around the world through my creations. I’m excited to see what God has in store for my life. My paintings have taken me places I’ve dreamed of and spaces I’ve longed for. Turning my passion into my career hasn’t been the easiest. When I first began painting, I enjoyed it because I was able to put my feelings into color and portraits. It was a way for me to express my true self and to see my heart and spirit through my creations. Over time, and throughout my college career I discovered my responsibility as an artist. I was called to create things that will outlive me, rewrite history, reveal my truth and paint people of color through my own unique lens. Balancing my passion for painting, my responsibilities as an artist, putting my heart into my work, and putting a price tag on these creations I’m so spiritually connected to seemed impossible. A lesson I learned along the way is how necessary it is to balance it all. While making art from my heart, I also have to be in my bag. To other creators- always create from your heart but know your worth. Some things you can put a price tag on and some things are priceless.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Biking is a must. Every new friend I make, I take them biking. I have more than one bicycle, so even when they don’t have a bike I’ll provide. I think biking is a way to practice being present and I love it because I feel like I’m flying and I want others to experience that as well. Dancing in the park, working out, creating art, and eating out together is my idea of a great time with friends. For food, I’m taking them to an Ethiopian restaurant no matter what city we’re in. But my favorite thing to do is have people in my apartment. It where all my art is, and I love that when people enter they feel safe, they feel inspired and they feel peace.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my parents, Nikki and Stan Johnson. From raising me in a loving space and constantly pouring love and inspiration into me all of my life. As soon as I discovered my love for art, they got my LLC, shared my work around the city, hung my artwork all throughout our home and paved the way for me to attend my dream school. (SCAD) Aside from being retired military, professors, teachers, and amazing parents. They we’re also very great artists when they were younger and I feel that their talents have manifested within me. So I am who I am, and I’m following my dreams for and because of my parents.
