We had the good fortune of connecting with Jade Weatherington and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jade, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
One thing people are unaware about in my industry, when it comes to teaching online, is that a teaching license or certificate is not required. Any skill, hobby, or passion can be taught online. While I teach academic courses, I have taken several enrichment courses by professionals in their field. This is an opportunity anyone can grasp if they want to become an entrepreneur or make income on the side.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started my business from a side hustle. I was working in a traditional public school and tutoring online for side income. When my daughter asked to be homeschooled, I started taking teaching online seriously and looking at it as a career option. From there, I developed an online academy to employee other teachers. It has been a long road as I have taught on various platforms while developing my own website which I then transitioned into helping others learn how to develop online courses.

It hasn’t been tremendously difficult because I never viewed it as a job. I love teaching! However, I did have some difficulties navigating teaching as a business. Even when I started homeschooling, I had to go through a process of deschooling which has helped me develop my online courses. The focus isn’t on one set of standards that are supposed to fit all ages and grades at a specific time. I am able to create courses that have flexibility to meet everyone’s needs. Knowing how to create diversified classes has also helped me in my coaching and consultation business.

I have learned to take each goal and break it into smaller goals, to really trust the process and realized there is no overnight success. Even when we are bombarded with people’s success stories, we don’t always get the whole picture. I want the world to know that what started as a side hustle became the ultimate dream and I intend on making it (Teacher Jade’s Writing Academy) even bigger!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friend was coming to visit for a week, we would have to visit some of my favorite places: Ponce City Market to grab food and then take a stroll down the beltline to Piedmont Park. We would have to eat at Mangos and head to Bar Vegan for drinks.

I would see if there were any music fest going on that weekend.

I would also take them to bootcamp with me at EFFECTS gym.

There are a lot of sites to visit in Atlanta, but I like to steer away from the tourist’s attractions.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would absolutely like to shoutout the whole Elevate Team, Our Village United, and Dr. Key Hallmon for creating and curating the business cohort I was able to take part in. The program allowed me to grow and learn more about myself and my business.
