We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacquel Tucker and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jacquel, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from the rural community of Higgins Land in Jamaica, just a few miles from Nine Miles where Bob Marley grew up and is buried. I grew up with my 8 siblings and my dad Jeremiah Edwards who was a Pastor and my mom Lydia Edwards who was a Youth Director for 7 churches. We grew up poor with no running water, an outhouse, and most times barely able to afford our dinner. It was quite an uphill battle to even attend high school due to lack of finances. In fact, as the youngest, I was the only one who of my siblings to receive a college degree and it was through a full academic scholarship to the University of Maine. I never really realized how poor we were until I started traveling further outside my community. We grew up a great sense of family, strong faith and found great joy in the simplest of things such as making dolls out of grass and sewing clothing for these dolls. I learned to be resourceful, resilient and to always see the glass half full. Now I approach even the most dire situation with an open mind – always looking for the opportunity and the solution. It is never it can’t be done but how can we get it done. This the mindset that I brought to my corporate career in the USA as a Hospitality Executive to subsequently becoming an entrepreneur and also founder of my non-profit The Jamaica Project USA.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

I am principal of The J Tucker Group and through My Purpose on Fire coaching program, I help kingdom minded aspiring entrepreneurs and professional get unstuck and gain clarity on their calling, establish an unshakeable foundation and set their Purpose on Fire by launching their true kingdom legacy with influence and impact. I am a Coach and Purpose on Fire Launcher.

My non-profit ministry The Jamaica Project USA was officially launched in 2016 with a mission to transform rural schools and communities in Jamaica and provide resources to underserved communities in Georgia, USA.

My greatest joy is serving others through my business and non-profit. My clients have launched businesses, non-profits, online courses and coaching programs. My small non-profit has completed 1 church and 8 school improvement projects in Jamaica, sponsored up to 40 students there annually and through partnership with a medical team, provided medical care for over 2,500 during our 2019 mission trip. During the pandemic we fed up to 2,000 families monthly in Georgia and served over 10 communities in Jamaica.

Remember the background I shared about how I grew up? Well, I believe in the impossible, not just for myself but also for other people even when they can’t see it for themselves. I bring an extraordinary level of inspiration, motivation and accountability in both my business and non-profit. I have an open mind and I don’t feel limited by my circumstances or circle. There is a big world out there with people who find value in what I do, that I am the right person to help them, and we share the same kindred spirit and big vision to walk in our calling and make the world a better place. So, I keep moving forward with this mindset…and it is working!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take them to Jinya Ramen Bar on Main Street in Alpharetta for their California Poke Bowl, visit the Avalon in Alpharetta and spend a night at the Avalon Hotel, check out the live band on the lawn, watch a movie at the Regal Theater, enjoy Jeni’s Ice Cream and Rumi’s restaurant. Check out live painting by Tamara Gammon at West Elm and shop her cool bag, painting and beach wrap collection.

Spend two nights at the Misty Pond Resort on Lake Lanier. Enjoy their pool, hot tub, s’mores by the fire pit, nature walk, and take their tritoon boat to Fish Tales restaurant on the water followed by boat ride around Lake Lanier.

I would take them to McDaniel Farm Park and the JeJu Spa both located in Duluth.

Visit Kingston 30 Jamaican Restaurant in Lawrenceville for their jerk chicken and patties and K&S Jerk Shop in Dacula for their steamed snapper with veggies and festival.

Visit the awesome “Hallmark” town of Dahlonega, GA. Do the carriage ride with hot cocoa and visit the quaint, unique shops for trinkets, candles, teas and fresh spices.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

First and foremost, I am so grateful to God. He has done the impossible in my life including bringing me back to life when I died at a young age, so I fully trust and believe in his plans, promises and purpose for me. He has set My Purpose on Fire and blessed me with the passion, gifts and expertise to help others do the same. My mom Lydia Edwards is the most kind, resourceful, resilient, sweetest and strongest person I know. I am who I am today because of her. She is the inspiration for starting my non-profit, along with my awesome In-Laws Jacquelyn and Sherman Morrison who are missionaries who inspire my husband and I every day. I am so grateful for my amazing and supportive family who live in the USA, Jamaica and the Bahamas and for my husband Shun Tucker who is my best friend, co-founder of our non-profit and who has taught me so much about entrepreneurship and life in general. My non-profit has accomplished amazing things and it’s because of the solid support of our incredible board members Ursula Johnson, Imlah Carey and Curtis Davis. Also, shoutout to my awesome friends, my clients who have given me the amazing opportunity to work with them, “My Purpose on Fire” tribe and my incredible mentor Tamara Lowe and the entire Kingdom Builders Academy team and community!
