We had the good fortune of connecting with J Primous and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi J, what’s the most important thing you’ve done for your children?
I’ve never attached the label “single mom/parent” to myself. There are stigmas, limiting and degrading energies attached to that societal ‘brand’. Yet, I am a mother who is single. While I am the sole provider, I made a choice to access the strength in my village and surround myself with family. There is no ONE important thing to DO or have done that has successfully guided me through the past 13 years, there are numerous choices I’ve made which led me to greater failures, lessons and created habits that have all shaped me a MOTHER.
My 13-year-old son has been home schooled for 5 years now and passed 10th grade state testing levels- 3 grades advanced. He is a PUBLISHED Author, releasing his first book “This is My Family and That’s Ok!” (amazon.com award winning for non-traditional family subjects) released in 2020. He is a business owner and growing as an entrepreneur, earning an income from his TikTok page which inspired him to create a MASTER CLASS to teach other business owners how to monetize their social media as well! While I would LOVE to take full credit for all of his successes, I must offer, the truths about what pushed me to make the choices I have.
The MAIN influencer in life was FEAR and my refusal to deny the truths about how much I DIDN’T know. My son lives with hearing loss in one ear and endured a speech challenge early. Being a black boy in the public school system, he was passed along and brushed aside, suffering socially. Working full time with a part time business, I was detached as a parent. I began to notice how my stress was affecting my parenting and my mental (and physical) health. After 8 successful years as a TOP Eligibility Worker & Social Worker in one of the most disenfranchised counties in Northern California, I decided to quit my job and dedicate myself to being a MOTHER. There were so many things I didn’t know and many of my closest relatives and ‘friends’ who told me I would fail. They ‘loved me to death’ – projecting their limitations onto me. At first, I listened, but it got me nowhere fast- broke my lease and bounced around living with friends trying to find my footing. But I noticed how less stressed we were as a family unit. I began to focus on my connection as a mother to my son and learned that he didn’t care about how much money we had, if I had a car or if we were on the bus; he didn’t care what type of house or apartment we lived in, he just wanted ME – HIS MOMMY and THAT was enough motivation to get me through every valley and dark place in my life. Nearly 6 YEARS later, we are STILL GROWING STRONG and being an example of POSSIBILITES for other families.
What I’ve learned is ESSENTIAL in my experience as a parent is that I shifted my focus to BECOMING the ADULT I remember needing as a child and remaining DEDICATED to BUILDING a LOVING, SAFE, CONSISTENT & TRUSTING RELATIONSHIP with my child to REAR him into his life’s purpose vs. “raising” him/merely providing and presiding over existence. While there as challenges still, I am confident in our successes as a FAMILY and being a REFLECTION of TRUTH & HEALING for my son as he grows! The current evidence brings me unspeakable joy- I can only imagine what more is to come! He is my HEARTBEAT & I wouldn’t be the woman I am today, if I didn’t take a leap of faith and fully embrace every opportunity to become a MOTHER. LOVE WINS in ALL SITUATIONS, and as long as my son holds on to THAT MANTRA, I believe his trajectory is guaranteed SUCCESSFUL and I’ve accomplished greatly!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My BRAND @BeEmressive (my alias “Empress J”) was birth out of my healing journey embracing ALL of ME despite outside voices. Serving as The Dream Doula- I guide creatives from conception to birth intuitively assisting them in manifesting their career and lifestyle goals. Traditional “business professionals” will encourage many to stick to 1 way – 1 focus which is debilitating to the creative spirit – that’s where I’ve found my niche.
I am a WRITER (publish author, playwright, song writer & poet), Sign Language Interpreter/ Instructor, Baker/Chef and Empowerment Speaker, Entrepreneur & Intuitive Guide. My struggles as a professional were immensely influenced by the fearful and limiting projections from others that I deemed ‘successful’. Once I TAPPED IN, TUNED IN & TURNED ON (Abraham Hicks) – deeper into MY OWN BEING, I found that I CAN DO IT ALL and SUCCESSFULLY! I found MY SUCCESSES are CUSTOMARY. The more a read books that weren’t so popular and listened to hidden lectures, I found that the path I wanted for myself could only be created by ME and as long as I stayed true to my personal moral and a High Vibrational Lifestyle (Lalah Delia) – I could live the life that I desired, Manifest the luxuries I wanted and cultivate the relationships and experiences I desired LIMITLESSLY.
While the journey continues and the cost of elevation creates new challenges, I find myself 4 decades on this earth SHINING BRIGHTER than I ever dreamed I would as a child. The dream Doula, LLC in conjunction with Be Empressive, LLC and P.U.M.P.S. for Women, Inc are ALL manifestations of SOURCE STREAMS – not just for finances yet for access to RESOURCES and EXPERIENCES I would have never gained if I would’ve listened to those expired trends of my past.
During the world’s most challenging times, I was granted the opportunity to assist my clients in acquiring over 1 MILLION DOLLARS in FUNDING collectively, while major corporations struggled with layoffs and foreclosures. My PASSION is my BRAND, my education, skills, gifts and talents are only the tools that have allowed me to build a legacy and be a reflection of POSSIBILITITES to those who are embarking on their creatively healing journeys!
I empower my clients to GO DEEPER, BELIEVE BEYOND, CHALLENGE DOUBTS & BE EMPRESSIVE while manifesting the lifestyles they desire and deserve! -Empressively Speaking
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When family comes to visit Metro Atlanta, I get excited to take them back down MY MEMORY LANE! I would begin in the WEST END – right at the gates of my Alma Mater SPELMAN COLLEGE (c/o ’04) in the AUC and reminisce about the days long ago when Marta was only 85 cents and meeting delivery drivers at the gate for discounted/forgotten pizzas! SOUL VEGETARIAN for lunch although I am neither vegetarian or vegan, the food is just THAT good! Their LONGEVITY is proof enough.
I would definitely take a ride through midtown where I got my first apartment as a young socialite- dog walking at Piedmont Park and listening to live blues music at Fat Matt’s BBQ Shack!
A Night ride through the city to get an up close and personal view of the skyline while blasting the Radio with the best of R&B always gives me good feels. Since Lenox closed their movie theater, Perimeter Mall for Movies and snacks is a MUST!
Because I love to cook- I wouldn’t visit too many restaurants – yet I have NEVER found a better city for the BEST WINGS ever- can’t go wrong Extra Crispy/double wet Lemon Pepper washed down with a COKE!
Many don’t know how many MONUMENTS are located in Atlanta- the King Center is a MUST and walking through the Sweet Auburn Festival (in season) will guarantee a connection to the history and vibes of the Atlanta I’ve grown to know and love. I personally like to patron the local street performers downtown, the city is BOOMING with TALENT and never void of potentially VIRAL characters out in the open! I quick mid-week trip to Little Five Points to feed my addiction to Crystal Blue Metaphysical Shop where you can meet some of the best creative expressions and artists is where I like to connect for inspiration.
Cascade Skate is a classic way to have a nontraditional dancing experience yet never for the newbies – gotta keep up or get off the floor! DUDLEY’S used to have $2 Tuesdays with karaoke which is always packed and fun – if only covid shutdowns could reversed. Sudo Lounge in Conyers is a great vibe – the bikers are always ready for a good time and their DJ rotation never disappoints.
To keep it mellow with a nice walk Arabia Mountain in Lithonia or Kenwood Park in Fayette County is the BEST for families – safe and PERFECT for a family experience in great weather.
Yet for me, a great back yard cookout with music, card games, drinks in the safety of home is ALWAYS on the menu whenever family is in town!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shoutout MY SON – ISAIAH DEASE for allowing ME to BE HIS MOM! He accepts me for who I am and LOVES BEYOND even my expectations regardless of my mistakes and faults. HE IS RESILIANT and growing to be a GREAT FORCE & POSITIVE LIGHT! I am grateful for my FAMILY- those who empower me, support me and reflect HEALING TRUTHS: my sisters Stasia Mobbs, Melissa Cook & Ayisha Sims (ALL of which are AMAZING MOTHERS as well)! I would like to thank my dad Eric “Ricky” McKinnie for being a pillar of strength; my ancestors who sacrificed their lives for my being and my Creator/my Source, My God!
And I would like to take the time to give MYSELF a shoutout, for NEVER GIVING UP. For ALWAYS BELIEVING & remaining OPEN no matter how hurtful circumstances have gotten. I LOVE who I am and who I’m growing to become which has taken me DECADES to truly embrace! I am PROUD of ME and will remain diligent as a reflection of the GIFT of HEALING POWER.
