We had the good fortune of connecting with J. Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi J., we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Of course starting your own business does come with its own set of unique risks. But without risk, how could you ever get the reward? The possibility of success is way more attractive than the thought of standing still and stagnant. It’s been said a million times over but it still resonates: You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

What should our readers know about your business?
Freeli TV is the world’s first linear free streaming TV app focused on urban entertainment. Freeli TV has over 50 channels of black entertainment showcasing the best in black cinema, music, and culture. . All for free. That in and of itself is super exciting. The African-American demographic is underserved but has exponential spending power. There is definitely a gap where the AA culture is looked at as mainstream culture but the people who created the culture are often ignored or looked at as an afterthought. We felt it was important that we bring that particular demographic up to the forefront and make them a primary audience instead of a secondary one. This has definitely not been an easy task. The entertainment industry is not full of risk takers. Oftentimes, someone in a position of influence will not want to move forward with something unless it’s already been proven. So our task/hurdle is to convince decision-makers that when you’re willing to blaze the trail, you will be the one who will enjoy most of the spoils while everyone else is trying to emulate it and play catch up.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would definitely go to Marietta Diner every single day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I love that restaurant. It’s been my favorite for over 20 years. We would certainly visit Atlantic Station if only to “people watch”. One thing about ATL. It has the most interesting people simply because so many people relocate here. So there’s a huge variety of people from all walks of life. That’s what makes this city so amazing.
