We had the good fortune of connecting with Isis Mayfield and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Isis, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I am from Sandy Springs, Georgia! I would say that my background impacted who I am today by it being filled with many experiences where I was allowed to be creative or see other people be creative. My mother is a creative person and she raised me in a way where I could experience many different kinds of things. She took me to many art-related events and showed the many parts of Atlanta. Also in high school, I took photography classes for 3 years and from there, I started to build my passion for photography.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My work is either inspired by something that I am personally going through or trying to achieve the magazine editorial look! I am super excited for these next couple of months because I am planning more creative shoots with new people! Many of my challenges are balancing between work, school and photography. There are times when I don’t take pictures for a while because I have to focus on school and make sure my grades are good! Along the way, I have learned how to better balance my areas of life and stay motivated.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Firstly, If I have a friend visiting me, I definitely think it depends on when they come and visit! If it’s the Fall time, I would first start the day off with some delicious doughnuts from Revolution Doughnuts. Then, I would take them on a stroll in the center of Atlanta. I would show them my favorite architecture and my favorite shops in the area such as Junkman’s Daughter. Then I would take them to East Atlanta to eat some yummy Asian food at Mushi Ni. Towards the end of the day I would either take them to an art related event such as Flux Night or an exhibition at the High Museum of Art.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am going to dedicate my shoutout to my high school photography teacher, Lana Ensmann. She helped me become the creative person I am today and I am so grateful that I had the chance to learn from her for 3 years. I started photography out of the pure interest of it and not knowing anything about it. In the end, I came out of high school having a great passion for taking pictures, knowing the basics of photography and expressing much of my creativity.
