We had the good fortune of connecting with Irwine Duncan and Cordell “Bobby” Llewellyn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cordell and Irwine, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
One of the 7 habits that we find very useful is the process of seeking first to understand, then to be understood. This is based on a Constructivist approach that values the diversity and complexity of human interactions. We try to be realistic about what we can change and what we cannot, and to appreciate the subtleties and nuances of each relationship. We aim to create win-win situations where we can contribute positively to the well-being of others. We use our skills and talents to make a difference in the world, not only for ourselves and the present generation, but also for the future ones.
The reason we started the B-LEW clothing brand arm of the business, it’s not because it’s just a t-shirt, it’s because the t-shirt, hoodie, crewneck is the new billboard of today. It’s a way for people to express who they are, what they like and what they love. Our goal is to make sure that everybody has a chance to express themselves and share that with others.
What should our readers know about your business?
We are a social enterprise that empowers BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour) youth and young adults in Canada to pursue their
passions and achieve their goals. We provide mentorship, training,
networking, and funding opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs,
artists, activists, and leaders who want to make a positive impact in
their communities and beyond. We believe that diversity is our
strength, and that everyone deserves a chance to shine. Our mission is
to create a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable society for
all.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We enjoy spending time with our best friends, who are outgoing, discreet and accomplished in their fields. We would begin our day with a brunch on Queen Street or Kensington market, both vibrant areas that offers a variety of cuisines and cultures. Then we head to Eaton Centre, a shopping mall or Yorkville area that both has something for everyone. We would also visit Dundas Square, a lively spot where we can observe the diversity of Toronto’s population. For dinner, we choose a fusion restaurant on King Street, where we can taste different flavors and dishes. After that, we stroll along the harbourfront, admiring the views of the city and the water, and watching the people passing by. To end the night, we attend a live show or a sports event, or a club depending on our mood. We will see the Raptors play, as they are one of our favorite basketball teams.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We would like to acknowledge the thought leaders who have inspired us.They are the ones who have the courage to innovate and challenge the status quo. They are not afraid to make mistakes and learn from them. They are the ones who combine different fields of knowledge and creativity.
Some examples of these thought leaders are Malcolm X, Mohammad Ali, the Civil Rights movement for their ability to persevere against all odds. In addition, the fictional captains of the Starship Enterprise, James Kirk and Benjamin Sisko, who always followed their hearts and their values, Leonardo da Vinci, who was a genius in art, science, and mathematics, Gregory Hines(as a performer), who was a versatile dancer, singer, and performer, and Isaac Hayes, who showed through his music that black men can be expressive and emotional. These are just a few of the many people who have influenced us. I (Irwine) also learn from my wife and children, who teach me how to be vulnerable, brave, and forgiving. I admire my business partner, who is breaking stereotypes by overcoming obstacles one by one. I (Cordell/Bobby) also admire Irwine for the same aforementioned reasons and also for his guidance of his (lived experience of the other side of the street) and support. We are always looking for new mentors as we explore new aspects of our venture.
