We had the good fortune of connecting with Imani Moore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Imani, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve been surrounded by businesses since I was born. My parents have always operated side businesses aside from their 9-5 careers. Even now in their retirement age, they still do because it allows them to operate in their passions. I didn’t realize it until I got older, but that’s what I grew up around. I always saw them passionate about their side businesses yet often times exhausted by their day jobs. I’ve played basketball since I was 8 years old. All the way up to college, sports and school was all I knew; Get good grades so you can participate in extra-curricular activities. So I didn’t spend a lot of time thinking about what I wanted to do after my playing days were over. My last year of college, I still was on the fence about pursuing something in my degree’s field. One thing I knew for sure was that I didn’t want to work for anyone else. I knew I couldn’t. Deep down inside I just knew that lifestyle wasn’t going to be for me; building someone else’s wealth, needing permission to take time to myself, not having the freedom to travel or do the things I want to when I want to. The only option that made sense to me was to start a business of my own. Even if I did need to obtain a 9-5 job out of college to get my feet wet, I ultimately knew at the end of the day I would be working on something to create wealth for myself.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am a real estate agent servicing the Metro Atlanta area with all of their needs from buying, selling, leasing, & investing. I have to tell everyone I work with upfront who I am & what that encompasses. So while I am a real estate agent, I am also a firefighter. I like to tell people that I am a firefighter by day & a real estate agent by night. That in itself makes me proud. I am the first woman firefighter in my family. It is an honor that I carry with me every day. Sometimes I have to remind myself of the fact that I’m here because I worked for this! I’ve put in the blood, sweat, tears, trials & tribulations, everything to be able to stand here today doing something that fulfills me in multiple ways. As a firefighter, I get to help my community. I get to show young black girls that anything is possible. That a career like this is possible & the possibilities are endless. On the other end, I get to educate my community on homeownership. I realized that a lot of fear in homeownership comes from lack of knowledge & just not knowing what actually is possible. They’re both very beautiful things to be apart of.
I’ve learned that sometimes you have to work your way through it, whatever it is. Also, there will be times when you just need to be still & take time for yourself. You can’t grind your way through everything. At the end of the day, if you don’t reserve space for yourself, you’ll never be able to achieve the success you truly deserve.
I want the world to know that I take pride in the brand that I portray. Reputation is everything to me. I take pride in anything my name is attached to. Whether I’m dealing with a patient or a client, I handle them with care & they all receive the same exceptional service across the board that includes the knowledge about the issue at hand & the resources to provide a solution.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is a good one. There are so many things to do throughout the city from the brunch spots, to the rooftop ambiances, to the city views. If this friend is someone who likes options & you’re not sure where to start, you can never go wrong with Ponce City Market. You can go wine tasting, shopping, play games, catch skyline views on the rooftop, listen to musicians have piano & singing sessions, the options are endless. If you want a little more adventure, a stroll on the beltline is always fun. Between the breweries, restaurants, skate parks, greenery to have a picnic. Of course there are tourist destinations such as the Aquarium, Zoo, Coca-Cola Factory, museums, etc. If they enjoy the outdoors, hiking is always peaceful. We have plenty of trails & parks to choose from with waterfalls, full hiking trails, bamboo forests, etc. One thing I love about Atlanta is that there is something for everybody here.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My ancestors; for those who have come before me and for those who will come after me, I appreciate you & your guidance for me on this journey. Without them, I wouldn’t know where I come from so it’d be hard to envision where I’m headed.
