We had the good fortune of connecting with Imade Omozore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Imade, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
Hello! I was born and raised in Queens, New York. I was raised by both a Nigerian father and a Jamaican mother. Being raised by both of these cultures has influenced me to persevere, embrace change and have resilience. This has impacted me for who I am today because I learned first hand experience that closed mouths dont get fed. If you want something, you have to put in the work to do it, and it has to start with you. From my father I learned the importance of entrepreneurship, being open to experiences and not to settle. My father has started and closed countless businesses, and is now reeping the benefits from them. From my mother, I learned that there is nothing that I can not do. Once you put your mind to it, you are already half way there to accomplishing it. What better city to implement these values other than the city that never sleeps! New York City teaches you how to hustle, how to connect and to most importantly use what you have to get where you want to be.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am the CEO for MadebyImade and my art is hairstyling. I do protective styles but I also create braided wigs for those who may have hair issues and/or who do not want to sit in the chair for so long. I am most proud of every wig I complete, It really is a work of art. Completing these wigs is not easy, they do take a certain number of hours to complete. I got where I am today professionally because of the mistakes and lessons I have learned. Professionalism is very important in curating the relationship with the client and it really sets the tone for future interactions. Lessons I have learned along the way is that you always represent your brand, enjoy the journey and never give up. Be humble but don’t be too humble to mention your brand. The journey of owning your business never ends, you will make mistakes and you will fail at some things. But failing is the first step in becoming good at something.Practicing the habit of consistency is really a habit that pushes you to never give up. You have to be consistent and actively show up for yourself every day. I want the world to know that my brand is for those who are ready to step outside of their comfort zone. My brand is for those who don’t have any limits and like to try new things. I may be new but I am here for the long run and protective styling can be for everyone.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I think the best places in NYC to go are the parks, the lounges and museums. Real New Yorkers know that Manhattan is overpriced and overcrowded. Explore Queens and Brooklyn for a calmer vibe and a more engaged experience.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shoutout my friends and family! Thank you guys for always believing in me! Big shoutout to my braid assistants Beatrice and Annabella! You guys have supported me in my low moments behind the scenes! Lastly big shoutout to my clients who stick with me regardless of other people and who are always willing to challenge me with new styles! Love you guys to the moon and back!
