We had the good fortune of connecting with Harold Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Harold, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
My favorite quote says, “When there’s nothing you can do but can’t do nothing. Do what you can”.

This quote speaks to the hardships I’ve had to overcome in my personal life and career. It has stuck with me through all my major milestones, like graduating as a First-generation student and moving 600 miles from home. What I like about this quote is it empowers you to do what’s within your capabilities, no matter the situation.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

It took a journey across the Atlantic Ocean in 2017 to discover my true passion for photography. Before my trip to Senegal, I purchased a DSLR camera at the last minute. This was my first official big-boy camera, and it ran my pockets for about $500. The pictures I took abroad were terrible, but they made me realize how much I enjoy taking photos.

After returning from Senegal, I continued my photography journey with no specific goal. There was something so special about taking pictures of regular everyday people and highlighting their identity.

In 2018, I got hired for my first official Gig. After gaining experience in the field, I went from shooting simple birthday parties to full-on weddings and designing photo sets. I make it my mission to approach every session with enthusiasm and attention to detail.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have only been in Atlanta for four months, so I don’t have many favorite spots. I would take them to South City Kitchen and The Select. We would probably only go to food places and maybe stop at the Georiga Aquarium.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a special shoutout to my heavenly grandmother, Marjean Martin. I only told her once that I like taking pictures, and every year during Christmas, she would buy me a disposable camera. I never did get any of those films developed, but I was always so grateful that she wanted to push my interest in photography.

I’d also like to recognize my mother, Melody Cooper. My mother is a fantastic artist/painter who motivates me to keep pursuing my dream despite the hardships that arise.
