We had the good fortune of connecting with Hannah Michelle Lambert and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Hannah Michelle, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
A huge social media presence is not the end-all-be-all of being successful in blogging.
I got really caught up at first trying to make it big on Instagram or tiktok, thinking it was the best way to get traffic to my blog. And so when I didn’t have 15k followers in a year like some people are able to do, I thought I was doomed. But as soon as I switched up my strategy and focused on SEO and building up my email list, all of a sudden my profit shot up.
I think a lot of bloggers talk about SEO, but since it’s not as “glamorous” as social media, it gets downplayed. But it truly is the best way to strategically build authority on your topic.
I still am on social media just to get the traffic I can from there, but it’s mostly just to have fun and play around creatively. As soon as you let go of the pressure to make it big on there, I swear blogging becomes a lot more fun.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am obsessed with tracking trends in interior design, but at the same time, I’m a firm believer in investing in your own personal style versus trends. Trends are a great way to find new things to experiment with, but something that I like to advocate for – both in my blogging and interior design work – is that you shouldn’t feel the pressure to adopt something because it’s trendy. Or to reject something because it’s not trendy.
So my work is very much so about creating design with a lot of personality. I want every space I design to be a really strong representation of the people who will be in that space. And the only way to really accomplish this is to push the envelope a little and incorporate things that may be weird or different to other people.
Getting to this point in my design process was definitely not immediate. Basically since I was a kid, I’ve been obsessed with interior design and keeping up with the trends. So I fell into the trap that a lot of other people do – just regurgitating the trends that I saw in my own spaces. But as I continued to tune up my skills and built confidence in my own vision and personal style, I’ve been able to lean less on trends and more on my own creativity. And it’s been an amazing revelation that I’ve come to over the past couple of years.
So that’s really the driving force behind Homey Homies. It’s all about interior design with personality.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Here is the perfect Atlanta Saturday:
AM – brunch at 10th&Piedmont with the chicken & biscuits and bottomless mimosas
A walk through midtown to the High Museum of Art to look at all the exhibits
Mid-day – Hit up colony square to take pictures with all of the incredible interior design and grab some snacks
Head over to Old Fourth Ward to walk on the beltline a little and hit up Ponce City Market for some shopping
PM – have the best tapas you’ll ever eat at Iberian Pig in Buckhead
Dance your ass off at MJQ – it’s might be a little underground pit, but the vibes are right. This is perfect even for friends with different music taste: one side is rap/hip hop, and the other is funky instrumentals that gets everyone moving
Once you leave the club – walk down a couple blocks and get you some Cookout. And you gotta get a shake with your tray.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to my team member, Thamara, who helped me build out a really solid SEO strategy and has been an awesome supporter of my blog ever since we first met.
