We had the good fortune of connecting with Gordon Lucas Jr. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gordon, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Before I started my business, I was really inspired by the social justice movement in 2020 and 2021. That’s when I began writing poetry to process what was happening and put my thoughts into words. Over time, I wanted to expand and write about other parts of our culture like faith, family, fashion, and everyday life. When I shared some of my poems with friends, their support and feedback made me realize I could turn this passion into something bigger. I wanted to create something meaningful that would leave a mark. That’s how 7Artifacts came to life in 2021, the name reflects the idea that completed works are timeless, and through this journey, I hope to inspire and connect with others across generations.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I currently work as a Federal Government employee, but what really sets me apart is that I didn’t follow the typical or expected path to get here. Honestly, I never imagined I’d be where I am today or even last this long in this career, it’s been nine years now. Before this, I was a barber. I had a trade, I was working with my hands, and then I made a big shift at 30 to start over in a completely different field.

I’m really proud of how far I’ve come and how quickly I’ve been able to grow in my career. But it definitely wasn’t easy. I got here by keeping God first, working hard, staying disciplined, and making a lot of sacrifices along the way.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is: don’t let people put you in a box. Coming from my background, being a 6’4” Black man and from my family’s roots, people often made assumptions about who I was or what I should be. But my mom always reminded me to keep God first and to remember that He gave me the ability to think for myself. That mindset has carried me through, and it’s something I want others to take from my story: you never know what you can accomplish unless you step out and try.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First, I have to give all credit to God, my faith has been the foundation for everything I do. I’m also really thankful for my pastor, Travis Jones, and for my family, especially my dad, Gordon Lucas Sr., and my close friends. Their support, encouragement, and honest feedback when I first started sharing my poetry really pushed me to keep going.

There were two key moments that shaped my journey. One was when life was just… a lot, and I needed a way to express what I was feeling. The other was when I shared those writings with the people close to me, and seeing how it moved and inspired them made me realize this was something bigger, something I wanted to keep doing.

I also find inspiration in the world around me, especially moments in culture. For example, when I watched Without Remorse with Michael B. Jordan, there was a line about how America has never really cared for the Black community, even though we’ve carried so much of its weight and still believe in the promise of something better. That hit me deeply and became part of why I want 7Artifacts to reflect not just creativity, but truth and resilience.
