We had the good fortune of connecting with Glody/Christian Ekofo/N’Siny and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Glody/Christian, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Our thought process behind starting our own business was essentially thinking about others in our community. We reflected on why and how such a rich country like Congo is looked down upon; why is the country overlooked? Yes, we’re rich in minerals, but we’re much more than that. We looked at our Congolese community here in Toronto and thought that we can shake things up and create a corporation with different branches of businesses. With God’s direction, we understood 4 main things: Congolese people are not the most savvy when it comes to understanding Finance (generally speaking), we love to party (concerts, weddings, etc.), we love fashion, and we have the most talented artists in the world! So we decided to create 4 subsidiaries within the corporation that focuses on: Finance, Events, Clothes/Merchandise, and Artist Management.
Our subsidiary that focuses on finance offers consultation on how to invest in the stock market and what stocks to buy/sell. In regards to events, we have held two big gospel concerts in Montreal in March of 2022 (Renaissance) and April 2023 (Destiny Tour Canada: Montreal). In terms of clothes/merch, we have created our clothing brand called “Bomoko” which means “unity” in Lingala, which is the prominent language spoken in Congo. Finally, when it comes to Artist Management, we are currently managing 4 gospel artist and helping propel their career.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
We focus on four different businesses within the corporation with one goal in mind, which is to unveil Congo’s riches. There has been a need in the community for years and a demand for change. But, usually with these type of discussions, there is no action put forth. We decided to go ahead and make moves and legitimatize our vision with a focus on four different businesses. Doing so was not easy at all, as we were using our own funds and also trying to gain an audience. Trying to understand how to get people to buy in to what we are doing became a big challenge. But, we overcame this by networking, using the resources that we had around us, and humbling ourselves. We had many friends with different businesses, and we took the time to pick their brains and ask all of our questions. Furthermore, we have siblings and friends that would help us for free in terms of making logos, doing music videos, photoshoots, producing music, etc. So we used these resources to our advantage to help kick start our business. In all of this, we had aspirations of becoming big right away, but quickly understood that we need to work in silence and simply let our work speak for itself; our time will come, in Gods time.
The basis of why we decided to undertake this business was not only to generate money, although there is nothing wrong with making money. One of the main objectives was to actually create positive change in the community. So far, we could proudly say that we are impacting our community, as more and more people in the community are producing their own concerts, asking us for business/financial tips and picking our brains. We have sparked something in the community where people believe that they can do whatever they have in mind.
What we want the world to know about our story is that there is always a humble beginning, but you need to start somewhere. You won’t get anywhere just by talking about it, action needs to be put with your words.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting Toronto, we will grab brunch at “The morning after”, and just visit the downtown core for a while. We’ll go visit the heart of Toronto, Yonge & Dundas and also visit the CN Tower and the Roger’s Centre. After that, we will go visit Canada’s Wonderland and just have fun at the amusement park. I would also have my best friend try out different restaurants in the city to get a taste of the diversity in cultures within the city.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There is a plethora of people who have assisted us with launching our business, and believed in our vision and decided to hop on board. Joviale Tshiyoyo was there from day 1 assisting with thinking about the business name and managing the business’s financials. Another shout out goes to Gabriel Kiameso who has held down the music department of the business, and helped release a few songs under the company label. Berna Kabwika is another person that deserves a shoutout, as she writes up our contracts, signs them, and coordinates our events. Another shoutout goes to our videographers & photographers, Christian Ekofo, Tino Mwamba and Annita Kayiba who have been of great help in shooting our music videos, undertaking our photoshoots, and even designing our company logos. Another shoutout goes to our social media manager, Noesa (NM Socials), who has completely revitalized our social media presence.
Final shoutout goes out to YG and Steelo for providing mentorship, both morally and spiritually. They’ve helped us understand the magnitude of what we are embarking in, and helped us remain focused and locked in.
