We had the good fortune of connecting with Geoycelyn Henderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Geoycelyn, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Honestly, there was no process behind the start of my business. I saw an opportunity and went for it! I was doing nails since I was in my college dorm and decided to drop out and pursue this industry. Since moving to Greenville I was able to grow a large clientele. I went from doing nails in my apartment, to renting a private suite, to back home again. I became complacent with doing nails in my apartment again. I had just finished nail school but was very hesitant on taking my state board test. That is when my grandmother gave me a phone call that changed my life. She had told me that once I pass my state board test she believed God would open doors for me. Who knew he’d open the doors to my very own luxury salon!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I feel like I have gotten so far in the nail industry by having a passion and love for people. I feel like people often forget the key to running a successful business is by being personable. I grew up a military brat. Every 3 years my family was on the move. Moving from place to place forced me to interact with different people, personalities, and energies across the country. I believe that’s why it’s so easy for me to connect with anyone! I love my clients, I love to talk, and I also love to listen. And people appreciate that all while getting an awesome professional service.
I believe what sets me apart from others is that I love to father to my clients needs. Whatever they ask for I try my absolute hardest to deliver. It doesn’t matter if their desired nail set isn’t my style or my cup of tea, if that’s what my client wants, that’s what he or she is going to get!
With that being said , I will add that this is also where I have had a lot of struggles. Meeting the needs of your clients and everyone around you can cause mental exhaustion. I found that I was struggling mentally for a while because I give so much of myself to my clients and left very little for me. There have been many times when I wanted to give up, but I had no choice but to keep going because this was my livelihood and my passion. Over time I have just learned not to quit but know when to rest! There’s nothing wrong with setting healthy boundaries and taking breaks! But an entrepreneur’s work is never done!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
When im in Atlanta I love to start my day with a breakfast or brunch at R. Thomas! I love their mimosas. Then I’d probably hit up Lenox and do some shopping! A little retail therapy never hurt anyone… plus we would need something cute to wear that night when we go out for drinks at Traffic!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I was very blessed to have an amazing support system. My parents, siblings, grandparents, and my fiancé all helped me pull my salon together. I could not have opened my salon without all the helping hands. They have dedicated their time and amazing effort towards my business as if it was their own!
