We had the good fortune of connecting with Genesis Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Genesis, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Let me start by introducing myself to the ones who may know nothing about me. My name is Genesis Williams. I’m a current senior, majoring in International Business, aspiring to be in the fashion world in a few years. When I entered my freshman year at Fisk University I wanted to be a Fashion major, but that was something that the university didn’t offer. Although they didn’t offer an actual program, I was informed that Fisk had dual programs with neighboring universities. Once I received more information, I found that they didn’t have a dual partnership with Tennessee State University, and I had sought out to be the first dual student with Fisk and Tennessee State in getting a fashion degree. It was so much harder than I had imagined, so I ended up settling with being a business major. I still wanted to do something with fashion, so the idea of creating something on the campus of Fisk University started to come about, and that’s when I found my purpose to create The Beginning Modeling Organization. The Beginning Modeling Organization was started by my best friend, Genesis Lawrence, and I back in 2019. The start of the organization lasted about 2 weeks before, it had to be paused for other reasons. In the new year of 2021, I decided to bring The Beginning Modeling Organization back, but with different focus areas, mainly being portfolio building.
This organization means so much to me. Not only is it something bigger than myself, it’s something I love that I can put my all into. Being an International Business major has given me insight on ways to properly run a business, and founding this organization has given me more insight on the fashion world. It’s like the best of both worlds, and this has been the road that’s gotten me to the mind set I’m at today. I’m currently aspiring to obtain a master’s degree in Fashion Management.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Back in 2019 I lost my passion for fashion and just wanted to be the best entrepreneur I could be, but now I’ve learned that I could obtain more. I have learned so much in these last few months of being the founder and President of The Beginning. If nothing sticks with me out of this organization or even if I was asked to give any advice it would be, “If it’s something you have a passion for, you have to go after it yourself, because you’re the one with the picture of how it should look or turn out. Put your all into it even if it stresses you out or if you feel like you have no one at least at the end you’ll see it for exactly what you dreamed of. Although it might be your dream, it’s others around you who have the same or even bigger dream of doing something similar.”
All in all just remember, when you have a dream, go after the dream, whether it’s now or later, never let your flame burn out. I hope upon graduation The Beginning continues for years to come, and creativity is continuously being poured into my organization.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If I had a friend come into town and I wanted them to have the best week possible, I’m imagining we are in Atlanta with no budget. We would eat at Sugar factory, Taco Mac, Cheese cake factory, Taste Atlanta, Mangos. Things I would love for us to do to have fun would definitely be shopping first on the list so maybe Lennox mall. The aquarium because of how big it is. Maybe alittle skating at cascade, we definitely need to go to the club so maybe the gold room or buckhead saloon. Then we can double back to the mall but check out Cumberland mall this time.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would Like to recognize The Beginning modeling Organization as whole, without ever member of this organization it would not be as amazing as it is today. I would also like to shoutout My mother Colleen Williams who is my inspiration behind fashion in every form.
