We had the good fortune of connecting with Genensia and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Genensia, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I pursued a career as an artist because it is the vehicle through which I know my calling is fulfilled. Music and artistry has been in my heart since I was a little girl. And now that I have my own story and experiences, I can give be a light and bring hope to those who choose to listen to my music. It’s fulfilling, it brings me joy, it fills me up. I wouldn’t and I couldn’t have it any other way.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m a gospel artist. The best genre in the world (I guess I’m a little biased haha). Since the release of my first EP, my challenge for myself has been to increase the level of authenticity and transparency in my songwriting. I am proud to say that my next project has done that. It was scary, cringe-worthy, and hard to accept that I was actually putting my “business” in a song for others to hear, but that is life–messy, scary, hard. And that’s the kind of gospel that I want people to hear. The one that reassures all of us that Jesus isn’t calling for the nice, neat, well-packaged version of us, but the messy, shameful, and often times hidden, parts of us. He is not afraid of the “funk”, so to speak, so I decided, if he still accepts me being the perfect, all-powerful God, what do I have to lose?

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friend were visiting the area I would take them to the general “Atl” attractions like the big ferris wheel, the Coca- Cola attractions, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights on day 1. Then the next day we’d go to a drive-in movie since those are almost extinct in the U.S. We’d head over to Busy Bee’s and grab a bite of soul food before or after the movie. On day 3, we’d fight all the calories from Busy Bees’ food by taking in the scenery and fresh air at Stone Mountain. Perhaps we’d bring a few snacks and a guitar and watch the sunset. On day 4, we’d visit Ponce City Market and hopefully catch an artist performing at night. After the performance we’d grab a bite to eat at Seven Lamps in Buckhead. On day 5, we’d maybe go to an open mic at Kat’s cafe or Apache and sit back and chill. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents. They have always encouraged and supported me, pushed me, and shown up for me when I didn’t know how to show up for myself.
