We had the good fortune of connecting with gB The G1ft and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi gB, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have always been somewhat of a socialite or natural entertainer. I enjoy making people happy and spreading positive vibes so a creative career was always around the corner. I attended performing arts school in elementary and was always taught to be a unique individual from people like my grandmother who was a politician and author. Growing up, I never shied away from the spotlight or being the center of attention so in many ways I groomed myself for this type of career from an early age. Sticking to the status quo was also never a good fit for me so I gravitated to more spontaneous expression and using my imagination.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
If I could describe my art in a few words, they would be: Impressive, Raw, & Motivational. My unorthodox song structure & quality classic production are what set me apart from today’s sound. I use allegory so most of my songs have double meanings and secret themes. My goal is to give an unadulterated perspective on life that can help others be true to themselves and make a real mark through self expression and not imitation.
As the old adage goes, “I want to give a voice to the voiceless.”
I stay focused on creating the soundtrack for the next generation of counter cultural neo-adults and pushing boundaries of entertainment, art, & overall lifestyle.
Nothing was ever handed to me freely and because of my background, I had no choice but to make a way out of nothing. My parents instilled at a young age that I have to earn everything I get in life and to aim for the stars with anything I do. So, hardship and resistance have never deterred me. Dealing with lack of inspiration, little to no financial means, discipline, etc. have long been part of the recipe in many aspiring creatives’ journeys and I’m no different. At some point something has to click and the dedication and consistency takes over. I feel like the birth of my daughter helped that happen for me. On top of my musical endeavors I also help run a multimedia company called JuNoMar that works in all creative mediums including art/design, sculpture, music, fashion, and film. Our 1212 network on YouTube is very successful and growing as well which adds to both our mystique and popularity.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My family is originally from Georgia & I went to school here in Atlanta so there’s no telling what I could get into on any day. First stop would be the Edgewood strip. An absolute breeding ground for new talent and grass roots movements in the city. It’s still vibrant and always busy hosting many night events, day parties, showcases, etc. I love the culture that stems from there and I have a plethora of lasting memories which we’ll save for next time, lol!
Next would be Peter’s St. which is very similar to Edgewood in that it hosts many restaurants, boutiques, tattoo parlors and major events. I love the location as well because it’s right in the thick of things and very close to the Mercedes Benz stadium and my Alma mater, Morehouse College.
That brings us to another great destination in the city which is the AUC or Atlanta University Center. Always a good time around homecoming and the whole environment is just nostalgic for me. I love giving impromptu tours there so hit me up if you’re around the way.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would first like to dedicate this to and shout-out all of my supporters because I see them as my “tribe” and value them like family. My next shoutout is to my wife and daughter because we are “All in” and dedicated to success, happiness, and love. If it wasn’t for that, I don’t see a reason to strive because honestly my loved ones and supporters are a big part of my “WHY.” That’s the short version of course because I’ve had great mentors on the way and til this day.
