We had the good fortune of connecting with Garrett Hines and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Garrett, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
That 2+2 doesn’t always equal 4. What I mean by that is booking a big role, or booking a long recurring role, does not mean that you’ll now automatically be considered for larger, more pivotal roles. Your ability as an actor is just one facet to why you might book a job: age, physicality, how popular the last gig you booked was (“heat” is a common term), and any number of attributes are a factor. So people on the outside looking in might notice your body of work and erroneously assume that you’ve achieved success, when you, as an artist, might feel like you’ve plateaued. Or, which is fun, they might see your recent work and think that you’re not doing well, when in fact you are. There’s nuance to the film industry.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Though I’m an actor, and that has been my main drive for 15 years, I now think it’s unpretentious when I call myself an “Artist”. I’m a writer, and always have been; shit, I even went to grad school for it and got a Master’s Degree in the field. But only until (very) recently have I fully realized that the written word is my favorite vehicle of expression. The stories I’m working on now have been the closest to shaking hands with El Duende then any of my acting jobs in the past 5 years
.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d take the to Lake Lanier. We’d pull a boat up to one of dem little beaches, crack open some beers, shoot the shit. Then I’d tell them all about the f*cked up history of the lake, and how it’s haunted by the souls trapped beneath the waves. Souls which lurk around their sunken tombs, forever trapped as underwater phantoms which legend says pull swimmers down to the murky depths.
If we survived, we’d go grab margs at Elmyriachi in Kirkwood.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My manager Kristina Sutton at Focused Artists and Citizen Skull. She’s been sticking up for me even when I wasn’t sticking up for myself.
