We had the good fortune of connecting with Gabe McAteer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Gabe, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risks is essential, it’s how people learn and improve. It is also something that I view as being an important part of the job description for a stand-up comedian. Whether you’re performing in a new city or trying new material at an open mic, every show involves some level of risk. It’s important to take risks because whether or not you reap the reward, there is always something to learn about whatever it was you were trying to accomplish.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My style/voice as a comedian is confident, irreverent, and unapologetic. But, I recognize that style and voice might change with time.

So, what I’m focused on right now is becoming more adaptable. The best sets/shows that I have had are when I adapt and tailor my style, material, and delivery to the audience. I think being adaptable to the audience allows you to be more creative and forces you to think of other ways new and old material can work.

The challenge for me is recognizing that in the moment and the only way to improve is to keep writing and getting on stage in front of different audiences. It’s a process that won’t happen over night.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I have friends visiting in the summer and the weather cooperates, tubing down the Chattahoochee River is a great way to spend the day. It’s also hard to beat a Braves game in the summer.

When it comes to food, I try to take friends to one of my favorite restaurants in the city, Fontaine’s Oyster House. They have incredible seafood and cocktails. Also, the Chattahoochee Food Works is a great place to grab a beer, go axe throwing and relax.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
One person who deserves special recognition is one of my best friends, Caleb. He talked me into pursuing standup and even helped me move to Atlanta. Also, the Atlanta Sports Social Club (ASSC) deserves a shoutout. Moving to a new city and meeting new people can be especially daunting, but ASSC makes it incredibly easy to do just that. Thanks to that organization I made a lot of good friends that turned out to be even better audience members.
