We had the good fortune of connecting with Fēi and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Fēi, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I got fired from all my jobs! From retail to to warehouse to the office all of them. I got let go from a part time job that I only worked 4hrs a week. It was tough, but I always came back to my art. I yearned to have a space where I could fully be myself and being an artist allowed me to apply my gifts to the fullest. Art has changed my life offering me confirmation and healing in ways I could never imagined. My biggest being my peace and I’m so thankful that I get to exercise what I love on a daily.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
The journey has been a roller coaster of seeking for something bigger than me and I didn’t at the time know it was bigger than me.

I had a real hard time my last couple years of college. Life just hit me hard and I didn’t know how to gather myself mentally. It struck some terrible life habits of my mental and dragged post college. I came back home living to live with my parents with no real goals in mind. Got locked into working retail that I worked more than three jobs in the same mall, my life was undesirable with no real purpose.

This process was two years of unknown in darkness. Then one day I bumped into an old classmate that was currently utilizing their degree as a designer and was like hey what are you doing? And I said nothing. From there they offered a space to allow me to tap back into my creativity. Guiding giving me projects to build on until, it wasn’t working. I wouldn’t be inspired and got frustrated when I didn’t complete a task or finish a project.

One day they said hey let’s not focus on my projects. What do you want to do? And I will never forget that question because I had no answer for it. Weeks pass and they came back around and said ok what if you started a vintage boutique what would that look like? How would that be? And then boom total alignment. I had vision and it was endless, coffee shop with a rooftop garden, a shared art space with multiple artists. No amount of money to or space has limitations and I was a kid again.

That spark ended up leading into phases of many more sparks of constantly evolving discovering and refining the love I have for being an artist. Art has allowed me to have access to knowing who I am and how I want to exist in this world. Having my awareness around knowing this has activated my life’s purpose to always be a creative and apply evolve and grow into what ever I desire.

My art centrals around connection. How can I utilize art in space that connects it to people? It’s the interaction between the two, the grey area that people need but don’t understand. Either I’m curating a gallery showing that gives dynamics of multiple artists who share a common space for the inspiration to a community that needs activation. Creating magical sets out of sheets and thrifted finds that make you feel like your in another world playing dress up and offering reflections of self love. Being a creative director on development projects for fine art fairs where thousands of people get it step into nostalgia and be the kid they thought the never knew again. All my art is about access to make the connection, to leave an lasting impression on our experiences to captivate a memory forever kept.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The list would be a whole novel with just names. All love goes to my community. A tribe of surrounding individuals that love and believe in me. My mother Carrie, who grounds me on a daily reminding me of my light. Letting me know that anything is possible when you access this world with love and light. My homie lover and best friend my life partner Kid, that loves me at my best and pours into me at my worst showing me that true love is a true reflection of each other and I’m so thankful to grow and learn from him. My fellow creative community that has magnetized my love and appreciation for individual creatives that bend the curve on a daily to strive for art in all aspects of our world. Being around these beautiful people keeps me inspired to keep shining my light I love and appreciate all for seeing me and we already know it’s a forever thing.
