We had the good fortune of connecting with F.A.B.L.E and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi F.A.B.L.E, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
I’ve always had a nasty habit to hyper-fixate on random tasks. It used to really hinder my progress in school and other activities. As a musician, however, I’ve been able to turn that habit into a useful tool. Having the ability break down a track and focus on its excruciating details has only helped in my pursuit of musical perfection.

I still feel like I have a long way to go before I’m ever truly satisfied with what I’ve done in my musical career. But I’m proud of the progress I’ve made.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been doing music all my life. At first it was as a classically trained trumpet player and pianist. After college I decided to branch out and discover what kind of music resonated with me, and what approach I wanted to take to create it.

I started rapping at 18 and producing at 20.

I chose the name F.A.B.L.E (Finally A Black Life Explained) so I could tell the stories of the people I grew up with in my neighborhood. I felt like if I learned how to articulate our experiences in the community, I’d be able to better understand myself and the role I played in everything.

I don’t ever really wanna teach anyone any sort of lesson with my art. I just want to show people a different point of view. Whatever someone takes away from it at the end of the day is up to them.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Chicago?? First off, we’re eating “Stop Along” in Logan Square. Great burgers, great pizza. After that we’re driving down lake shore drive, cause no matter how many times you see the view of the lake, it never gets old. Then we’ll take em down to Hyde park, take in a bit of south-side culture. There’s another great food spot there, “Shinju Sushi”. Don’t be fooled by the name, they got the best ramen in town.

The Harper court theater is probably showing some pretty good movies at that point, so after dinner is a show.

After that? There’s a few bars in the wicker park strip worth hitting, so why not?

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Friends like “Soso, ‘Kechi, Jake Viktor, Domerie, and Mahalo” couldn’t have made it very far without their support.
