We had the good fortune of connecting with Evan Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Evan, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

My thought process behind starting my own business stemmed from me wanting to do what I love forever on a bigger scale. I was already freelancing so I started educating myself on the steps needed to get my career off the ground.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art might spark from a line in a song or a random thought I had that needs to be shared but I also create sometime with no direction and end up naming it later. I paint, do graphic design and photography so I might use one or mix all mediums depending the energy I’m trying to give off. I’m most proud of the opportunity I have to continue to pay it forward for the next creative who finds it difficult to create using more than 1 medium. I got where I’m at today by learning from my peers & colleagues before me on how they maneuver through the art business world and staying true to my focal point when looking for inspiration. It’s definitely not easy but reminding myself this is what I’d be doing if money wasn’t a factor and continuing to have fun with it helps me overcome. I learned comparing your art to others art is as pointless as comparing who’s baby is cuter. What I want the world to know about me is my art name is Van Hiller and H.I.L.L.E.R. is an acronym for Humane, Introspective, Leaders, Learning, En Route. I’m from the Bronx where I’ve been shown a lot of examples of what I rather not be doing with my future so I expressed myself through art and dance to create my own world. Looking back I’ve always been a humane, introspective, leader, learning, en route to my full potential.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friend was visiting NYC we’d definitely go to the MOMA or find galleries in the city. I love Thai so I’d take them to Spice or find some Mexican cuisine. If we hadn’t visited my family 1st on the itinerary we’d do that after dinner and if not hang out with them find a open mic event to enjoy live music and spoken word. It’s a week long trip so one of these days we’d go to Brooklyn so they can meet my friend Frank who’s a beat producer. When I go to see Frank we either work on music together or I work on my art while he works on his so it’ll be a creative space for all to be productive. Brooklyn also has great food so we’d check out Caribbean Cafe Footprints.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Thomas J. Cooksey deserves more than a little credit. Thomas taught a photoshop class I was apart of in 2014 and has been a mentor to me ever since. He’s seen the potential in me since then but doesn’t hesitate to remind me how far my art has come. Thomas also helped me get my 1st camera and now that I’m growing in that field, he offered me a spot on his production team Reel Deal Digital. Reel Deal has been a great fit, being around other creative minds is imperative.
