We had the good fortune of connecting with Evan Brock and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Evan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was knowing I wanted autonomy…. Knowing that I wouldn’t have been as successful in an environment that could possibly limit my full freedom, control of my ambitions and creativity.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Well.. lol….The road to where I’ve gotten today wasn’t the freshest of paved asphalt let’s say that. Before venturing into the entrepreneur lane I was a professional basketball player. I was fortunate enough to play at the highest level. That comes from get work ethic, focus, determination and really believing in your capabilities. These things that helped me succeed in basketball are also some of the things that catapulted my entrepreneurial drive and helped me overcome the difficulties that I faced Currently, I have an HBCU student housing development pending that will be eco friendly, sustainable as well as provide a solution to the current housing crisis . Also finishing up a documentary series that highlights the untold story of what athletes transitioning from the sport to real life. I have experience in tech, crypto and consulting.
I am an extremely big dreamer and visionary, so when it comes to ventures or ideas I truly shoot my shot. Whether I know how to do something or not, if I can visualize it then I can make it happen. Some processes take longer than others but I’m willing to take risk going after what I want.
The lessons I’ve learned are, well, for starters entrepreneurship is costly lol. You have to really be willing to make sacrifices for what you want to build. I’ve also learned that you will encounter plenty of “no’s” from people or companies that you want to do business with and you can’t be afraid of that. Learning how important it is to have patience with yourself through the process and how vital it is to pick the right team members for the journey..
What I want the world to know about me, my brand and my story is that I am speaking from a stereotyped image. Meaning that any place I go, because of my height I was only accepted as an athlete. 98% of people that see me will ask “How tall are you” “Do you play basketball” “Who do I play for?”, “Well you better be doing something with that height” “You’re wasting your height if you’re not playing basketball”,… I told one lady in response to her saying she hopes I’m not wasting my height by not playing ball, I said I have a brain and my brain works. She paused and said she wasn’t expecting that and apologized.
All that to say, I want the world to know that like myself there are others out there that may feel you are put in a box or labeled and viewed as one dimensional. I am a representation of versatility, ambition, vision. Athlete turned business man that sets his business focus on purposeful initiatives that help people’s lives.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If My best friend is coming in town to visit we are going to experience culture, fun, fitness and food! Breakfast at Barney’s is a must to start the morning off right. Happy hour food Kona grill at the Avalon, catch a Hawks game at State Farm arena. The belt line is good to have some fun on the scooter and check out some artwork. Go visit the AUC aka Atlanta University Center Consortium to see the historical black colleges and universities. It’s a must to stop by The Gathering Spot to meet the CEO and founders Ryan Wilson and TK Peterson for one of the best vibes you can imagine. Set the tone for the night by going to Apt4B for a great ambiance. Rosebar, Whisky mistress and Blue/Lucca lounge are on the list too. I’d take my best friend to Elite performance and strength to get a much needed workout in. Stop by sweathouz for some extra calorie burning in a luxury infrared sauna.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I can only take a small amount of credit in my self development because of so many that have poured into me from childhood to adulthood. The outstanding contributions I’ve had from my superb family and tremendous friends, along with others I’ve met in passing. They all deserve credit for helping become who I am today from my character to the accomplishments of any kind that I’ve had.
