We had the good fortune of connecting with Erika Mays and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Erika, putting aside the decision to work for yourself, what other decisions were critical to your success?
Well lets start out with the fact that deciding to work for yourself is a huge responsibility — i applaud ALL entrepreneurs greatly for taking such dedicated risks in their lives…especially those like me who are young, black and don’t come from generations of this type of success.

Now to your question, what’s been most important in my career might surprise you — but it’s quite simple. And it’s been to fearlessly connect with individuals outside of my direct sphere. You always hear about how the 10 closest people to you are who you’re most like, and this year i have taken a great step toward finding new tribes and really becoming the student in the room. This has allowed a fresh perspective on life business and people and has really helped me form some awesome connections.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I sort of stumbled into the Voice Over world in the pandemic – and since then I’ve voiced over 100 projects for various brands including Wayfair, Kellogg’s, and Shutterstock to name a few. I’m actually really grateful for the experience – – i mean, i just remember telling myself i’ve always wanted a job that is different everyday, has the ability to travel or stay at home, allows me to be creative while of course being financially stable for the lifestyle i hope to achieve. It’s insane how this career fits all of my needs and I can’t wait to do more in this field.

Due to the flexibility of this career i now have time to contribute toward my content creation as a
Youtuber (@erikasway_) where i vlog lifestyle content surrounding mindset, fitness and overall health.

It certainly wasn’t the easiest path, i am now 30 years, old and still figuring out a lot in life but being able to find a job i love feels like an immense pressure lifted from my life, because i can find gratitude in where i stand in the world. My goals are to build my platform to teach, inspire and motivate other young adults into living a life they enjoy.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well the good news about being in NYC is if you have enough time and money, you can spend forever finding fun things to do:

I’m a sucker for organization so we’d most likely start from the top of NYC to the bottom. City Island is always a great time, as there is a strip of amazing seafood spots – if that’s you’re thing bring extra napkins and big pants!

Then, we’d take a bike ride through riverside drive in Upper Manhattan, the views of the water are so peaceful,

Then, what’s an NYC trip without lunch in Central Park?

I’d do some shopping in Soho because i just love it there and is a must see area

Take the train across the Williamsburg bridge, and grab dinner in a beautiful low key area there!
