We had the good fortune of connecting with Erika Allison and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erika, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
NuFeet was born from recognizing a gap in the nail and pedicure industry for specialized services, products, and education centered around medical pedicures. I wanted to create a brand that not only provided high-quality products but also supported people who often go overlooked in traditional foot care services. My goal was to empower nail professionals with the knowledge and tools to deliver safe, effective, and compassionate care tailored to specific foot health needs. My commitment to health, safety, and education in foot care drove me to establish NuFeet as both a trusted resource and a community for professionals dedicated to excellence.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started from a completely different world: drag racing motorcycles, a hobby that turned professional in 2010. Along the way, I also gained experience working as a paralegal for attorneys and managing the front desk for a physician’s office. I always had an entrepreneurial spirit, with skills in website building and other areas that prepared me to start my own business. When I moved to Atlanta in 2010, I realized I couldn’t rely on motorcycle racing as a long-term career and needed to think strategically about my future. After attending nail school in 2012, I discovered a niche market for specialized pedicures aimed at clients who could benefit from collaboration with a podiatrist. Although I didn’t envision myself working with feet every day, my desire to help people who truly needed it led me to create NuFeet Medical Pedicures.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I originally planned to stay in Georgia for just a year, but I ended up staying because of the incredible community of black entrepreneurs who inspired me to build my own business here. Being surrounded by so many successful black business owners made it hard not to feel empowered. Atlanta is filled with amazing people and historic places, and I love showing friends around to experience the vibrant local businesses and culture. From high-alkaline, electric food spots like Tassili’s Raw Reality to comforting Southern BBQ at Fox Bros, the city’s food scene is unmatched. But Atlanta offers more than just great food; there’s hiking at Sweetwater Creek in Lithia Springs, or a weekend retreat up in North Georgia for apple picking and cabin rentals. I wouldn’t let anyone leave without visiting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s home and church, and taking a drive through downtown Atlanta to admire the stunning skyline.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’m proud to have several NuFeet Ambassadors and certified Medical Pedicurists who have taken my training to earn those titles. They serve as an extension of my business, creating “branches” that carry NuFeet’s mission to other parts of the world. I want to give a shout-out to every nail technician who sees the bigger vision of NuFeet and has invested their time and resources to offer safe, waterless pedicures in their communities. Their feedback over the years has been invaluable in helping me refine and elevate the NuFeet brand.
