We had the good fortune of connecting with Eric Burke and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eric, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
One day as my fiancé and I sat together with a glass of vodka, we discussed the popularity of the beverage in pop culture and the many restaurants, bars, and package stores we see in our community. With our business degrees and marketing experience, we decided to join forces and develop a vodka brand. We met online 2 years ago and believe good fortune was in our corner as we fell in love and beat the odds. We wanted our vodka to represent good fortune and positive energy. We soon learned about the history of the Black Onyx gemstone and how for thousands of years, it has been known to possess positive qualities and help in the balancing of the bearer’s life. Black Onyx Vodka was born.
What should our readers know about your business?
We are an Atlanta-based, black-owned, vodka company called Black Onyx Vodka. We named our spirits company after the Black Onyx gemstone, which has been known throughout history to possess positive qualities and help in the balancing of the bearer’s life. We believe in positivity and good fortune and wanted those values to be at the core of our company. We are excited about curating every ingredient in our product to deliver an experience our customers will want to enjoy at all occasions and events.
Our vodka will be available in stores throughout the state Georgia in March of this year. It has definitely not been an easy road for us. The spirit’s industry is a heavily regulated industry in which we had to receive approvals from Federal, State, and Local jurisdictions before our vodka could be available for sale. The industry also has a three-tier system in which dictates your role in providing the product to the public. We overcame these challenges by staying patient, planning, and working on other aspects of the business while waiting for approvals. Along the way, we’ve learned to persevere and keep our minds on the main goal during rough times.
We want the world to Discover The Spirit of Black Onyx Vodka! our vodka is 6x times distilled for a smooth taste, locally made in the USA, black-owned, and will definitely make your drink an experience.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There are so many good spots in Atlanta. I would take them to Atlantic Station, Ponce City Market, a show at Fox Theatre or Studio Movie Grill.
We would eat at a Pappadeaux restaurant, visit the shops at Atlantic Station, see a movie at a Studio Movie Grill Location and go to my house to drink some Black Onyx Vodka.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to Shoutout the black-owned businesses in Atlanta that have supported our vision and shown love and encouragement throughout this process. We received so many calls, messages, and consideration from our community eager to work with us, promote our business to their audiences, and invite us to events.
